THE PLAYS:
Upside:
Play Date: 06/24/2009
BNI (Burlington Northern--$72.98; +0.62; optionable): Railroads
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/bni.html
After Hours: $72.98
EARNINGS: 07/23/2009
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Looking at BNI again as it has set up at a solid support level after fading back from the early June lateral consolidation. Broke higher out of a 5 month reverse head and shoulders pattern then spent June testing. Held the 50 day EMA (70.95) on the Monday and Tuesday lows, then trying so rally Wednesday only to lose most of its gain. Still in the pullback so just looking for a break higher that sustains itself into the close. That is when we move in.
Volume: 2.247M Avg Volume: 3.069M
BUY POINT: $73.54 Volume=3.5M Target=$87.95 Stop=$70.38
POSITION: BNI JN - Oct. $70c (54 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 06/24/2009
BRCM (Broadcom--$24.44; +0.24; optionable): Semiconductor integrated circuits
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/brcm.html
After Hours: $24.46
EARNINGS: 04/21/2009
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Nice high volume breakout to end May, clearing the late April/early May double peaks. It has tested back the past two weeks, coming back to those peaks and the rising 50 day EMA (23.83). Tapped that support on the Tuesday low and rebounded on solid trade. Closed higher Wednesday though giving back much of the gain. Another close higher is our entry point.
Volume: 10.086M Avg Volume: 12.765M
BUY POINT: $24.68 Volume=18M Target=$29.74 Stop=$23.44
POSITION: RCQ KW - Nov $23c (64 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 06/24/2009
CTRP (Ctrip.com International--$43.00; +2.47; optionable): Chinese travel services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/ctrp.html
After Hours: $42.19
EARNINGS: 05/11/2009
STATUS: Double bottom. CTRP ahs formed up a short double bottom the past week and one-half following the fade off the strong run from late May. Tuesday it bunched up at support at 40 and Wednesday bounced on rising volume. Great quick recovery and willing to move into some positions as it continues higher and then looking to add some positions as it tests this move. Very solid.
Volume: 1.125M Avg Volume: 1.622M
BUY POINT: $43.23 Volume=2M Target=$49.75 Stop=$39.89
POSITION: QCT IH - Sept. $40c (66 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 06/24/2009
FSLR (First Solar--$171.19; +6.77; optionable): Solar circuits
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/f/fslr.html
After Hours: $171.44
EARNINGS: 04/29/2009
STATUS: Taking another look at FSLR as it tests the January peak, thus far holding that support (162.54) with a Tuesday doji and then bouncing on strong volume Wednesday. Some resistance at 175, but willing to take a partial position on a continued move higher that holds near toward the close
Volume: 4.983M Avg Volume: 3.435M
BUY POINT: $172.24 Volume=4.2M Target=$198.78 Stop=$163.44
POSITION: HJQ IN - Sept. $170c (53 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 06/24/2009
QCOM (Qualcom--$45.27; +0.78; optionable): Telecom licensing
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/q/qcom.html
After Hours: $45.27
EARNINGS: 04/27/2009
STATUS: Ascending triangle. Had a feeling we were getting shaken out of QCOM on Tuesday, and sure enough it rebounded on the close and then bounced to the upside Wednesday. That recovery keeps it in a neat little 4 week consolidation around the early May peaks. Looking for a continued move higher to start some positions.
Volume: 19.724M Avg Volume: 18.713M
BUY POINT: $45.44 Volume=22M Target=$52.65 Stop=$43.11
POSITION: AAO JI - Oct. $45c (55 delta) &/or Stock

Downside:
Play Date: 06/24/2009
EEM (Emerging Markets ETF--$31.22; +0.67; optionable)
After Hours: $31.31
STATUS: Head and shoulders. EEM made us some good money on the March to early June run, but then it double topped in the first two weeks of this month and gapped lower. Tumbled to the 50 day EMA (30.76) and held some support Wednesday, bouncing with a gap higher Wednesday. It tapped resistance at the early May peak on the high and sold back. Looking to move in on a continued move lower from this failure at resistance. A move to the target lands a 53%ish gain.
Volume: 80.959M Avg Volume: 71.942M
BUY POINT: $30.96 Volume=88M Target=$28.91 Stop=$31.77
POSITION: EEM TB - Aug. $32p (-66 delta)

Play Date: 06/24/2009
PBR (Petroleo Brasileiro--$38.88; +0.25; optionable): Brazilian oil and gas
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/pbr.html
After Hours: $39.19
EARNINGS: 08/07/2009
STATUS: Head and shoulders. We were eyeing PBR for an upside move, but with the market you always have to be open to what it shows you. Thus after PBR gapped lower Monday after trying to hold some support at 40 and bounced Tuesday and Wednesday, tapping the 40 resistance on the Wednesday peak before turning over and closing flat. Looks like a classic setup to move back down toward the March peak at 35. A move to the target lands us a 46%ish gain.
Volume: 18.328M Avg Volume: 19.828M
BUY POINT: $38.59 Volume=21M Target=$35.05 Stop=$40.22
POSITION: PBR TN - Aug. $40p (-50 delta)
http://www.investmenthouse.com/ci/pbr.html
Play Date: 06/24/2009
SU (Suncor Energy--$28.96; +0.20; optionable): Tar sands
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/su.html
After Hours: $28.99
EARNINGS: 07/22/2009
STATUS: Double top. SU twin peaked and tumbled lower the past week. It held some support at 28 on Monday and Tuesday but rebounded Tuesday after the test and tried to keep the move alive Wednesday. It rallied up to the 50 day EMA (30.10), tapping at that level and turning back over. Looking to move in as SU continues the test off resistance. A move to the target lands a 48%ish gain.
Volume: 10.064M Avg Volume: 11.587M
BUY POINT: $28.74 Volume=15M Target=$26.16 Stop=$30.15
POSITION: SXH TO - Aug. $30p (-63 delta)
