THE PLAYS:

Upside:

Play Date: 07/07/2009
AUXL (Auxilium Pharmaceuticals--$28.96; -0.26; optionable): Drug products
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/auxl.html
After Hours: $28.96
EARNINGS: 05/06/2009
STATUS: Flag. Broke sharply higher to end June, clearing a 3 month cup with handle pattern. Has come back to test the past week, tapping at the 18 day EMA (28.56) on the Tuesday low and recouping some losses. Nice easy test and looking for the break higher on rising trade to give us the buy point.
Volume: 160.034K Avg Volume: 470.679K
BUY POINT: $29.35 Volume=650K Target=$34.89 Stop=$27.31
POSITION: UQX LF - Dec. $30c (48 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 07/07/2009
GCA (Global Cash Access--$7.68; -0.05; no options): Credit services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/g/gca.html
After Hours: $7.68
EARNINGS: 05/06/2009
STATUS: Test breakout. GCA was a new issue in late 2005. That didn't immunize it against the selling in 2008, but it is a leader moving out of the lows. Strong March to early May surge, blasting off on earnings in early May, but that was the peak of that move. It did not reverse, however, forming the current 6 week cup base. Strong volume on the break higher and now testing this month, coming back to the 10 day EMA (7.67) on low, below average volume, showing a tight star doji at that near support. Higher low, looking for a break higher on rising trade.
Volume: 548.435K Avg Volume: 759.189K
BUY POINT: $7.84 Volume=1M Target=$9.69 Stop=$7.29
POSITION: - Stock (no option chain)

Play Date: 07/07/2009
OPTR (Optimer Pharmaceuticals--$14.32; -0.27; optionable): Biotech
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/o/optr.html
After Hours: $14.32
EARNINGS: 05/07/2009
STATUS: Flag. When in Rome . . . OPTR broke higher to end June, clearing an 8 week base. Testing this month, coming back to near support at the 10 day EMA (14.27) Tuesday. Rallied to a new high on the move but not viewing that as a negative even in the weaker market as the drugs/biotechs are getting the money right now. Looking for a move up off this test, holding the move into the close to give us the buy.
Volume: 220.367K Avg Volume: 262.636K
BUY POINT: $14.61 Volume=385K Target=$16.95 Stop=$13.18
POSITION: QDT IV - Sept. $12.50c (74 delta, low OI) &/or Stock

Downside:

Play Date: 07/07/2009
MVSN (Macrovision--$20.92; -0.36; optionable): Business software
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/mvsn.html
After Hours: $20.92
EARNINGS: 05/06/2009
STATUS: MVSN peaked a nice run in early June. Started to test and then got volatile with two tests of the 50 day EMA (21.29). It bounced twice but when it tried to hold again Monday it gave way on Tuesday. Rising trade as it broke. Want to see it test the 50 day; prefer a test of a breach like this to make sure the pattern is breaking down. It may take a couple of days or so. In the interim we can take just a few positions on a continued break lower in the event it does not come back, and if it does, add when it tests, and fails. A move to the target lands a 52%ish gain.
Volume: 1.938M Avg Volume: 1.589M
BUY POINT: $20.78 Volume=2M Target=$18.55 Stop=$21.55
POSITION: MVU TX - Aug. $22.50p (-61 delta, low OI)

Play Date: 07/07/2009
SNY (Sanofi-Aventis--$29.50; -0.79; optionable): Drugs
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/sny.html
After Hours: $29.81
EARNINGS: 07/29/2009
STATUS: Not all drugs are doing well. SNY rallied into June then got volatile. It then broke down late in the month, gapping lower three times. Bounced higher to end the month, but stalled out at the 50 day EMA (30.55). Started to roll over on Tuesday and as SNY continues we are ready to move in for the next downside leg. A move to the target lands a 45%ish gain.
Volume: 2.084M Avg Volume: 2.543M
BUY POINT: $29.39 Volume=2.6M Target=$27.55 Stop=$30.68
POSITION: SNY TF - Aug. $30p (-48 delta)

New buy point on current position:

Play Date: 07/07/2009
GS (Goldman Sachs--$142.54; -3.92; optionable)
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/g/gs.html
After Hours: $142.80
EARNINGS: 07/14/2009
STATUS: Double top. Looking at some new positions on GS as it turns over from a test of the late June peak, the second high in the pattern. Looking for more positions as it continues the Tuesday roll back down. A move to the target lands a 50%ish gain.
Volume: 9.482M Avg Volume: 17.864M
BUY POINT: $142.22 Volume=24M Target=$131.44 Stop=$147.18
POSITION: GS TI - Aug. $145p (-49 delta)
