Upside:
Play Date: 11/18/2009
CAT (Caterpillar--$59.41; -0.47; optionable): Heavy equipment
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cat.html
After Hours: $59.26
EARNINGS: 01/26/2010
STATUS: Ascending triangle. CAT is enjoying a solid uptrend since the late July breakout form a 2.5 month base, its first base off the March low. It has since formed a series of three smaller bases of 6 to 7 weeks each. Each time it broke higher with a strong surge of 7 to 8 points and then formed a new base. Right now CAT has made a higher low on top of the rising 10 day EMA (59.02) just as it did in September before that breakout and in October before that breakout. Looking for a break higher from the test the past two sessions. The 60 minute chart shows an even better pullback to test the modest gap higher to start the week. Good setup.

PLCE (Childrens Place--$34.87; -0.13; optionable): Children's apparel stores
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/plce.html
After Hours: $35.00
EARNINGS: 11/19/2009
STATUS: Ascending triangle. Big surge off the March low doubled PLCE's price. It sold off half the gain into early July, but has been building a series of higher lows below that June peak at 36 ever since. The range is tightening this month with PLCE holding near support at the 18 day EMA (34.52) this week, tapping it on the low and then rebounding to close. Strong volume Wednesday, the first above average volume in two weeks. Looking for a break higher from here to enter the play.

REP (Repsol--$28.14; +0.24; optionable): Oil and Gas major
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/r/rep.html
After Hours: $28.13
EARNINGS: 11/12/2009
STATUS: Ascending triangle. This is REP's second triangle formed since it broke off the bottom in March and rallied into early June. It broke out of the prior triangle, one that was just about identical to this one, in early September and rallied to 28.50. It then formed this current pattern, making higher lows below that constant peak, building pressure for the breakout with those higher lows. Big volume spiked Friday and volume has remained elevated this week as REP makes a higher low at the 18 day EMA (27.74) near support. Stocks often launch breakouts from this pattern from the 18 day so after the Wednesday gap higher we are ready to move in as REP continues the move higher through the buy point.

URBN (Urban Outfitters--$33.08; -0.64; optionable): Teen apparel stores
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/u/urbn.html
After Hours: $33.72
EARNINGS: 11/12/2009
STATUS: Breakout test. Broke out in late July and has rallied to mid-October. The past 4 weeks URBN has tested, tapping at the 50 day EMA (31.34) and recovering through last week with a lateral move. Broke higher Friday and Monday and has come back to test Tuesday and Wednesday, holding over the 18 day EMA (32.81). Looking for URBN to hold that level and rebound on some solid trade. That is when we move in.

Downside:
Play Date: 11/18/2009
WMS (Williams Industries--$43.07; -1.50; optionable): Resorts and casinos
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/w/wms.html
After Hours: $43.43
EARNINGS: 10/26/2009
STATUS: WMS' steady uptrend off the March low reversed to end October as it gapped lower on earnings. Big volume is important and it had it. It also needed to move through a support level and it did, the top of the September consolidation. Sold off to the bottom of that trading range and then recovered this month. Made it back to the top of the range Tuesday then reversed Wednesday on a shot of stronger, average trade. That rebound retraced 50% of the selloff. It double topped at that level; just what you want. Ready to move in as WMS continues downside. A move to the target lands a 58%ish gain.
