THE PLAYS:
Good moves: APPX; QCOM; SLAB; LANC; CHS; SPW
NEW BONUS PLAYS:
Upside:
HNR (Harvest Natural Resources--$6.19; +0.29; no options): Independent oil and gas
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/h/hnr.html
STATUS: Testing breakout. HNR broke out of a 2-month cup base in late September and is now testing that breakout as it moves laterally along the 10 day MVA (5.90). This is what we like to see: breakouts come back to test and hold the 10 day MVA and then rally up from there. Accumulation is solid at 6 up weeks on rising volume to 3 down weeks on rising volume. It looks to be preparing for its next move up on this breakout.

BCGI (Boston Communications--$10.83; +0.35; optionable): Wireless communications
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/bcgi.html
STATUS: BCGI is trying to break out of its year-long range, running up to 11.10 Thursday on strong volume before backing off on the close. It continues to show excellent money flow and accumulation, and we look for a breakout soon.
Volume: 254.487K Avg Volume: 147.045K

BSX (Boston Scientific--$36.4; +0.8; optionable): Medical instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/bsx.html
STATUS: After the big breakout BSX is moving along the 10 day MVA (35.34), laterally consolidating the move on lower though still average volume. Looking for a new breakout here.
Volume: 2.496M Avg Volume: 2.392M
BUY POINT: New positions: 37.15 (orig. $30.94). Volume=3.3M Target=$40 Stop=$33.94

CRL (Charles River Labs--$39.95; +0.47; optionable): White rats
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/crl.html
STATUS: Ascending wedge. Right at the breakout point in its wedge that follows the cup base it formed from June to August. We really like these combination patterns and CRL shows excellent accumulation in the entire base.
Volume: 337.3K Avg Volume: 577.818K

Play Date: 10/14/2002
ELAB (Eon Labs--$22.8; +0.48; no options): Drug manufacturer
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/e/elab.html
STATUS: New issue in May, ELAB is also moving in a wedge pattern following the breakout of a cup base in September. Thursday it started the move on a good surge in volume but it could not hold the entire gain (24.11 on the high). It looks as if it is readying for the move up and we want to be there when it moves again.

LANC (Lancaster Colony--$46.74; +2.02; no options): Housewares
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/l/lanc.html
STATUS: Breakout. Thursday LANC made the breakout from its quick double bottom, moving on some solid volume. It is still a buy here (but not much further) though we would like to see just a bit of weakness and then we move in. May not get it however as it started off strong Thursday and finished at the high.

NBIX (Neurocrine Biosciences--$41.6; +0.7; optionable): Biotechnology
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/n/nbix.html
STATUS: Getting very ripe in the pattern as NBIX has formed an ascending wedge the past two months at the end of a cup base. The lows are higher while the highs are steady across the top. Volume was up Thursday as it edged toward the breakout. Looks very strong with excellent accumulation.

NEW PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT PLAYS
Play Date: 10/17/2002
TTC (Toro--$61.67; +2.42; no options): Mowers and the like. Forecast to announce a split on 12-4-02 in conjunction with earnings. The company has not confirmed this information, but based upon our research this is the date for the release.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/t/ttc.html
Based upon our research it does not appear that TTC has ever split its stock. The annual shareholder meeting was on 3-14-02
STATUS: Reverse head & shoulders. Kind of a cup, kind of head and shoulders, TTC is making a strong move up out of the pattern. Accumulation is very good at 10 up weeks on rising volume to 6 down weeks on rising volume. Looking for a move over the old high as our entry point.
Volume: 97.1K Avg Volume: 76K
BUY POINT: $62.08 Volume=120K Target=$72 Stop=$57.73

PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT PLAYS
Play Date: 09/07/2002
EDMC (Education Management--$44.57; +0.1; optionable): Education and training. Forecast to announce a split on 10-24-02 in conjunction with earnings.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/e/edmc.html
BACGROUND: Last announced a 2 for 1 split on 12-2-98 at a stock price of $46. The annual shareholder meeting was on 11-8-01 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
STATUS: Still working its way up the 18 day MVA (43.90), a decent recovery after it tried to make the run Tuesday. Volume has dried up once again as it did test back to 43 on the low Wednesday and bounced some Thursday. Now we need to see a strong move on volume. The safest entry point for new positions is to let it clear the recent high at 46.06 on some big volume.
Volume: 271.802K Avg Volume: 375.227K
BUY POINT: Aggressive: from here on volume. Breakout: 46.10. Volume=520K Target=$49.45 Stop=$40.95
POSITION: UKN LH - Dec. $40c (65 delta, low OI) and/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/edmc.html
Play Date: 10/05/2002
IGT (International Game Technology--$70.02; +0.42; optionable): Gaming electronics. Forecast to announce a split 10-23-02 in conjunction with earnings (company has not confirmed this date).
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/i/igt.html
BACKGROUND: IGT has never announced a stock split, but the gaming sector is performing well and the stock is near an all-time high, a leader in the market.
STATUS: Cup w/handle. IGT was at it again, gapping to 71 Thursday but unable to hold all the move. It is banging away at a breakout. It is a market leader and we will continue to see if we can get a good move that continues to build through the session. We will move in at that point. Accumulation in the pattern is positive at 9 up weeks on rising volume to 8 down weeks on rising volume.
Volume: 951.7K Avg Volume: 1.007M
BUY POINT: Breakout: $70.95 Volume=1.2M Target=$80 Stop=$66.45
POSITION: IGT DN - April $70c (51 delta) or IGT AM - Jan $65c (61 delta) and/or Stock

Play Date: 10/02/2002
MME (Mid-Atlantic Medical--$41.06; -0.56; optionable): Health care plans. Forecast to announce a split 11-6-02 after the close.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/mme.html
BACKGROUND: MME has announced two prior splits in 1993 and 1994. For the first time since that time the stock is back at those levels.
STATUS: Testing breakout. MME was moving well, gapping to 43.20 Thursday before getting a valuation downgrade and turning over and dropping a half point. Volume backed off on the move though still high. MME is a leader in fundamentals and one of the first to breakout. We are looking for it to hold at the 10 day MVA at 40 as its first test to shake off the valuation call.
Volume: 1.095M Avg Volume: 540.5K
BUY POINT: $40.75 Volume=650K Target=$46 Stop=$37.85
POSITION: MME CF - Mar. $30 c (77 delta, low OI) OR MME CG - Mar. $35c (64 delta) and/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/mme.html
UNH (Unitedhealth Group--$97.7; -0.28; optionable): No split announced with earnings. More likely will be on 10-23-02 in conjunction with a board meeting (last split announced). The company would not confirm the board meeting date, but based upon our research this is the date for the next board meeting
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/u/unh.html
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2 for 1 split on 10-25-00 at a stock price of $106. The annual shareholder meeting was on 5-15-02 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
STATUS: Cup. Blasted higher up to 100 on the open but could not hold the move. Volume was strong as UNH came back to close at the June pre-correction highs that market the left side of the base. It will most likely form a handle above 95 after such a violent reversal, and it needs to settle down as it does. After that we will look for another run up on volume. This is what we were anticipating on Tuesday.
Volume: 4.064M Avg Volume: 2.422M
BUY POINT: After a pullback to test 95, $95.35. Volume=3M Target=$106.88 Stop=$92.25

SPW (SPX Corp.--$107.25; +4.27; optionable): Auto parts. Splits 2:1 on 10-25-02
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/spw.html
STATUS: Continued its rocket launch over the 50 day MVA, heading for the target at 110. No new positions for now, but if it gets near 110 and starts to stall we will take the gain. Then we will look for it to peel back and maybe squeeze in one more run before the split.
Volume: 537.4K Avg Volume: 494.909K
BUY POINT: No new positions at this point. Volume=425K Target=$110 Stop=$102.55
POSITION: SPW KA - Nov $105 c (70 delta)

CONTINUING CANDIDATES
Play Date: 10/03/2002
HSIC (Henry Schein--$55.02; -0.3; optionable): Wholesale medical equipment
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/h/hsic.html
STATUS: Tried to make the big move but gave it all back (high 57.10) to close lower on lower, below average volume. Needs to come back and test the 10 day MVA at 54 again on continued lower volume then a move back up on rising volume. Looking for a test and then a rebound.
Volume: 431.69K Avg Volume: 430.318K

CHS (Chicos Fas--$19.30; +1.6; optionable): Apparel
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/chs.html
STATUS: Double bottom. Making the breakout of its 4.5 month base after a large but low volume pullback Wednesday. Very good volume move Thursday above the 'hump' in the double bottom. Positions can be take here.
Volume: 1.968M Avg Volume: 1.362M
BUY POINT: $19.35 Volume=1.9M Target=$23.25 Stop=$18

Play Date: 10/12/2002
PFGC (Performance Food Group--$36.63; +0.52; optionable): Wholesale food
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/pfgc.html
STATUS: Testing the 10 day MVA. PFGC rallied on strong volume Tuesday and is backing off to test the move. Thursday volume was low as it moved higher off the 10 day (35.87). This is a good pullback to take some positions as was done Wednesday. On a move over 37 on above average volume there is an add-to point.
Volume: 217.724K Avg Volume: 450.272K
BUY POINT: $36.55 Volume=500K Target=$39.5 Stop=$34.25
POSITION: PGU LF - Dec. $30c (82 delta, 73 OI)

Play Date: 10/12/2002
SHFL (Shuffle Master--$21.9; +0.54; optionable): Card shufflers
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/shfl.html
STATUS: Breakout ascending wedge. After a quick test of the breakout that touched back to 21 on lower volume, SHFL moved up again Thursday on rising, above average volume. This was the move we were looking for, and it opens the door to additional positions. Accumulation in the pattern was positive at 6 up weeks on rising volume to 5 down weeks on rising volume. This wedge is part of a larger 6-month cup base.
Volume: 334.856K Avg Volume: 288.136K

TSCO (Tractor Supply--$39.39; +1.93; optionable): Ranch stuff
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/t/tsco.html
STATUS: Breakout cup with handle. After a quick test Wednesday TSCO blasted higher Thursday on rising, above average volume. This was the move we were looking for. Too far to chase here and will look for additional positions on the first test of the breakout.
Volume: 527.036K Avg Volume: 172.272K
BUY POINT: No new positions (orig. $37.65) Volume=235K Target=$45 Stop=$35.01

Play Date: 10/16/2002
WHI (W. Holding Company--$18.25; +0.17; no options): Savings and Loan
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/w/whi.html
STATUS: Double bottom. WHI has formed a double bottom the past 7 weeks, using 15 as the bottom. This past week it has rallied up to form the right leg on strong volume. Thursday volume dried up as the stock showed a doji as it tried to move over the buy point. Looks as if it may for a handle here, a lateral move over the next few sessions before making the breakout.
Volume: 88.6K Avg Volume: 263.772K

XRAY (Dentsply--$42.3; +1; optionable): Dental supplies and instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/x/xray.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Started the breakout Thursday from its 8-week base as volume surged while XRAY moved over the buy point. It hit 42.91 on the high before giving some back late, but it was a solid move and we were happy to enter this stock that continues to perform and announce splits. It is still a buy as it has just cleared the buy point. Accumulation is positive at 2 to 0 in this short base.
