us stock market, stock split

Begin Part 2 of 2

THE PLAYS:

Good moves: PFGC; BYS; BCGI; KLAC. Wish all stocks and sectors moved this well.

LEADER PLAYS: Splitting stocks are often market leaders and thus we do not just focus on them at points where they are expected to announce or before they actually split. They provide many opportunities to invest in them and this section is where we can look at some former split stocks and other stocks that are in good position to make us money.

NEW: A former split play that has worked its way back into a good pattern.

WFMI (Whole Foods Market--$47.44; -0.3; optionable): Natural food grocery store
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/w/wfmi.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. A rather up and down pattern, but WFMI has carved out a 5-month base and is now forming a handle to that base the past week as volume has moved well below average during the pullback. Accumulation during the base is solid at 8 up weeks on rising volume to 5 down weeks on rising volume. That means overall there were buyers of the stock as it based out. Now we need to see a strong volume breakout over the high in the handle.
Volume: 390.438K Avg Volume: 658.454K
BUY POINT: $49.35 Volume=975K Target=$56.75 Stop=$45.94
POSITION: FMQ BI - Feb. $45c (64 delta) and/or Stock

CONTINUING PLAYS

Upside:

Play Date: 10/24/2002
ABFS (Arkansas Best--$30.48; -0.39; optionable): Trucking
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/abfs.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. Holding above 30 on the intraday tests and closing over the 10 day MVA (30.40) as volume dries completely up. Held up well during the overall down session, a good sign.
Volume: 112.5K Avg Volume: 371.454K
BUY POINT: $31.05 Volume=475K Target=$37 Stop=$28.88
POSITION: FDQ CF - March $30c (60 delta, low OI) and/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/ci/abfs.html

Play Date: 10/08/2002
NBIX (Neurocrine Biosciences--$42.56; +0.84; optionable): Biotechnology
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/n/nbix.html
STATUS: Cup/Ascending wedge. Solid move off the 50 day MVA (39.48) Friday and a further move Monday but volume was still not there, coming in below average. Still looks very solid and looking for stronger volume on a strong breakout. This is a wedge following a cup, one of our favorite patterns. Excellent accumulation.
Volume: 580.4K Avg Volume: 689.318K
BUY POINT: Next: 42.85 (orig. $42.35) Volume=1.1M Target=$50.75 Stop=$39.39
POSITION: UOT BH - Feb. $40c (60 delta) and/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/nbix.html

Downside:

Play Date: 10/24/2002
VARI (Varian--$29.43; +0.45; optionable): Scientific and technical instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/v/vari.html
STATUS: Put. Ran up over the 18 day MVA, but reversed and closed a fraction below that level on continued above average volume. It now looks ready to resume the fall in its continuing downtrend.
Volume: 383.477K Avg Volume: 439.5K
BUY POINT: $28.85 Volume=500K Target=$26 Stop=$31.15
POSITION: IUA NF - Feb. $30p (-52 delta)

POST-SPLIT

Play Date: 10/21/2002
ALLY (Alliance Gaming--$17.25; -0.45; optionable): Gaming
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/ally.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. Very nice lateral move over 17 as the 10 day MVA rises to meet it. Volume has trended lower as the stock as pulled back. This is exactly the kind of test we like.
Volume: 554.44K Avg Volume: 613.318K
BUY POINT: $18.12 Volume=845K Target=$21.75 Stop=$16.85
POSITION: AQL DC - April $15c (76 delta, low OI) and/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/ally.html

Play Date: 10/19/2002
HCBK (Hudson City Bancorp--$18.49; -0.13; optionable): Savings and loans
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/h/hcbk.html
STATUS: Held up very well in the Monday selling as it moved just fractionally lower on very, very low volume. This action continues the tight, lateral handle to its double bottom base. Looking very solid and in a sector that could provide some good gains.
Volume: 107.34K Avg Volume: 278.772K
BUY POINT: $19.05 Volume=475K Target=$22.85 Stop=$17.55
POSITION: KHQ DC - April $15c (no OI) and/or Stock
