3) EXTR: Excellent test of the 200 day MVA breakout.
4) SLAB: Breaking down on rising volume.

NEW PLAYS:

Play Date: 05/17/2003
AOS (A.O. Smith--$31.37; -0.08; no options): Electric motor and water heater equipment
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/aos.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. AOS formed a 3-month cup with handle from January to mid-April, breaking out at that time and rallying higher. It started its second leg higher six sessions back and then spent last week in an orderly test of that move, sliding back to hold above the 10 day MVA (31.03). Friday it showed a hammer doji as volume jumped back above average. AOS sported solid 7 to 2 accumulation in its base (7 up weeks on rising volume to 2 down weeks on rising volume) and is showing excellent money flow. Relative strength broke out with the stock. Very nice test and we are looking for the price to rally with the volume. Very nice.

Play Date: 05/17/2003
CCU (Clear Channel Communications--$40.68; +0.18; optionable): Broadcast radio
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/ccu.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. CCU is moving in a 4-month base showing solid 5 to 2 accumulation. It is currently moving through a week-long handle that is testing the 10 day MVA (39.89) on the low as volume trails off. The lower intraday lows helps shake out the remaining weak holders, and the lower volume shows there are not many sellers. Money flow is outstanding as CCU makes the lateral move. Friday volume started to rise as CCU moved up off the 18 day MVA to post a modest gain. Price/volume action looks soli as it starts its move higher. Very nice action.

Play Date: 05/17/2003
EXTR (Extreme Networks--$5.33; -0.02; optionable): Internet software
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/e/extr.html
STATUS: Testing the 200 day MVA. After moving in a trading range from 3.75 to 4.75 the past 4 months, EXTR blasted higher early last week, clearing the 200 day MVA (5.09) on huge volume and then coming back late in the week to test that move. Friday EXTR held the 200 day MVA on a gap lower but rallied back for a modest loss. Accumulation is solid at 6 up weeks on rising volume to 4 down weeks on rising volume. Money flow has shot up ahead of the stock price and is still leading the way higher. EXTR is one of those internet stocks we used to trade regularly in the heyday. Looks ready to start the move higher, but we want to see the volume turn up as it does.

Play Date: 05/17/2003
QLGC (Qlogic--$46.21; -0.27; optionable): PC Data storage components
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/q/qlgc.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. QLGC broke out of a 5-month reverse head and shoulders pattern in late April, and rallied up to 47.50 Tuesday. It has since eased back to the 10 day MVA, tapping that support level on the Friday low (45.91) on lower, below average volume. It showed a doji at that level, i.e., the open and close prices were almost identical. That shows buyers and sellers evenly matched after the sellers were ahead on the pullback. Dojis can signal a change of momentum/direction, especially when they occur over support. Looking for a bounce higher on much stronger volume to enter positions.

Downside:

Play Date: 05/17/2003
SLAB (Silicon Labs--$26.82; -1.57; optionable): Semiconductors
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/slab.html
STATUS: Put. SLAB has gone from looking pretty decent to really hurting in just a few short weeks. It double topped at 31 and tanked to the 50 day MVA at 28. Friday it dumped lower on rising, above average volume. The stock is under distribution and money flow is tanking. SLAB may try a rebound to test the 50 day MVA before falling further; that is our favorite entry point on the downside play as it is the same as a test on an upside breakout as it proves up the weakness. Still, given the fall we are willing to take some positions on a further drop and then if it bounces, complete the position when it rolls back over.

Play Date: 04/02/2003
ADBE (Adobe Systems--$35.94; -0.44; optionable): Application software
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/adbe.html
STATUS: Testing the 18 day MVA. ADBE is still showing a good test of the 18 day MVA (35.92) with its third doji at that level the past three sessions. This follows a breakout of its cup with handle base in March. A very nice test, and we are looking for a higher volme rally off this level.

CY (Cypress Semiconductor--$9.8; 0; optionable): Semiconductors
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cy.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. New buy point for a current play. CY exploded out of a 4.5 month cup with handle base in April Rallied to 11, and is now testing that breakout. It has pulled back to hold just over the 18 day MVA (9.60) on mostly lower volume. In the Friday selling CY showed a very tight doji on below average volume, holding over the 18 day. After a pullback on a nice run this can indicate a move back up. CY is holding the breakout and support at the 18 day. Excellent money flow. Looking for a bounce back up from here on some sharply higher volume.

HTCH (Hutchinson Technology--$27.56; -0.15; optionable): PC data storage devices
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/h/htch.html
STATUS: Ascending Triangle. Still trying to make the breakout from its 5.5 month base. HTCH tested down to the 10 day MVA on the Friday low (26.65) and then rallied back on rising, above average volume. Accumulation is solid at 6 up weeks on rising volume to 4 down weeks on rising volume. Another triangle that has formed after a cup base, and that action sets a good foundation by shaking out the weak holders. Friday may have been the last quick test toward 26 we were looking for. Now we look for a high volume breakout from the pattern.

STATUS: Cup with handle. HYSL started the break higher Thursday on rising, above average volume, moving up and out of the handle of its 3.5 month base showing solid 5 to 3 accumulation and strong money flow. Friday HYSL held basically steady on lower volume in a down market. Looking for more upside on strong volume.

STATUS: Cup w/handle. Friday LU started the breakout on stronger volume from its 4-month base showing solid 5 to 1 accumulation (5 up weeks on rising volume to 1 down week on rising volume). Excellent money flow is leading the way. LU is still a buy on a further volume rise.

http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/merq.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Still in the very nice 5-month base sporting 3 to 1 accumulation and excellent money flow. MERQ moved laterally Thursday and Friday, continuing the lateral move testing the strong breakout Monday. Looking for a continuation of the move on rising volume, preferably above average.

NBIX (Neurocrine Biosciences--$49.19; -0.01; optionable): Biotechnology
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/n/nbix.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Wednesday NBIX rallied out of its 5-month base as the solid 4 to 2 accumulation and strong money flow. Thursday and Friday it ran out of steam, testing the 10 day MVA on the Friday low (47.99) and rebounding to close flat. It looks as if NBIX is going to snug up closer to the 10 day MVA before making its next move, but the action is excellent and we want to pick it off for new positions after it tests the 10 day once again and then rallies on rising volume.

STATUS: Breakout test. This is a very nice 2-week test of the breakout from early April. PENN formed a very nice 6.5 month base ahead of this breakout. Good 7 to 4 accumulation in the base. Again, a very nice test and we are looking for a strong volume bounce up from here.

STATUS: Testing the breakout. PWN is on its second test of the short term MVA after the April breakout, falling back to the 10 day MVA (11.26) late in the week. Friday volume jumped above average as it tested the 10 day and held. Money flow is strong, accumulation is solid. Looking for a solid volume move back up from this test.

UIS (Unisys--$10.72; +0.24; optionable): Information technology software

STATUS: Cup w/handle. Toward the end of the week UIS became more volatile, dipping below the 18 day MVA (10.57) Thursday on rising volume. Then Friday it bounced back over the 10 day on even stronger volume. This looks as if it is a final shakeout in the handle to its 5.5 month base showing excellent 8 to 3 accumulatoin and outstanding money flow running up ahead of the price even on this dip.
