THE PLAYS
In each report we prepare full write-ups for those that look ready to move. If the move has been made already we discuss the play in the summary table. The purpose is to focus on the next good movers. New pre-announcement plays are found in that section.
NEW PLAYS: This section includes new plays from all sections other than pre-announcements.
Upside:
Play Date: 08/26/2003
ASKJ (Ask Jeeves--$17.81; +0.57; optionable): Internet information
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/askj.html
STATUS: Reverse head and shoulders. This stock won't stop. We made money on it as it rallied up from the October low. Now it has spent the past 7 weeks consolidating that move, working off the 50 day MVA (15.66). It just made a higher low at the 18 day MVA (16.97) and started up Tuesday on rising though still below average volume. Accumulation is an excellent 4 to 0 (4 up weeks on rising volume to 0 down weeks on rising volume), money flow is leading higher, and relative strength is ready for a breakout, a solid indicatoin of the move.
Volume: 1.613M Avg Volume: 2.5M
BUY POINT: $18.62 Volume=3M Target=$22.35 Stop=$17.25
POSITION: AUK LW - Dec. $17.50c (60 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 08/26/2003
ATML (Atmel--$4.06; +0.27; optionable): Semiconductor memory chips
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/atml.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Ready to make the breakout from a 9 month base showing solid 12 to 4 accumulation. Money flow is surging ahead of the price and relative strenght is ready for the breakout as well. Volume has started to swell the past two weeks as ATML jumped higher. You could say it already broke out, but this little lateral move the past week is a good shakeout. Looking for volume to jump back up as it continues the move higher.
Volume: 7.335M Avg Volume: 7.805M
BUY POINT: $4.32 Volume=10M Target=$5.22 Stop=$3.97
POSITION: AQT AA - Jan. $5c (46 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 08/26/2003
CPTV (Captiva Software--$6.02; +0.02; no options): Application software
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cptv.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. CPTV broke out of a year long base in March, rallied to 6, and from there has formed the current 6 week base that used the 50 day MVA (5.29) as support. Accumulation in the short base is an outstanding 4 to 0. That is supper buying, and money flow is racing ahead even as the stock moves laterally in a narrow range at 6. There have been two huge volume spikes over the past week intermixed with the lower volume. These are 'get ready' spikes, meaning there is heavy accumulation and it is crouching for the breakout. Looks solid.
Volume: 99.759K Avg Volume: 138.727K
BUY POINT: $6.18 Volume=200K Target=$7.75 Stop=$5.75
POSITION: - Stock (no option chain)

Play Date: 08/26/2003
KOOL (Thermogenesis--$3.55; +0.08; no options): Scientific & technical instrumentation
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/k/kool.html
STATUS: Flat base. KOOL is working on a 2 month flat base ranging between 3 and 3.50. It has been using the 50 day MVA (3.17) as support on the lows as it moves on mostly below average volume. That is what you want to see in a base (quiet trade that gets rid of the impatient investors). Interspersed with the low volume are some big volume spikes, one being Tuesday. Accumulation in the base is positive at 2 to 1. Huge money flow and relative strength already breaking out. Ready to make the move.
Volume: 127.926K Avg Volume: 97.636K
BUY POINT: $3.64 Volume=105K Target=$4.45 Stop=$3.34

Play Date: 08/19/2003
GLDN (Golden Telecom--$30.5; +0.4; no options): Wireless communications (Russia)
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/g/gldn.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. Huge volume surge Tuesday as GLDN started up off the 10 day MVA (29.69). It rallied but then came back from the high (31.35). Solid move but would have preferred it to hold the gain.
Volume: 658.377K Avg Volume: 160.409K

HBIO (Harvard Bioscience--$5.15; 0; no options): Scientific & technical instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/h/hbio.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. Still massing for the breakout, tapping the 10 day MVA (5.07) on the lows and rebounding as pressure builds below 5.25. Money flow is moving up ahead of price as it moves laterally. Strong relative strength ready to breakout as well. Just waiting for the break higher.
Volume: 38.8K Avg Volume: 101.636K
BUY POINT: New: aggressive: $5.28; Breakout: 5.42 (orig $5.10) Volume=153K Target=$6.54 Stop=$4.94

Play Date: 08/21/2003
HDTV (Spatialight--$3.92; +0.02; no options): Microdisplays for high res imaging
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/h/hdtv.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Somewhat volatile on some decent volume, and then jumped up late in the session. Solid enough to enter, and still looks solid with money flow leading the way. 7 month base sports excellent 10 to 4 accumulation (10 up weeks on rising volume to 4 down weeks on rising volume).
Volume: 118K Avg Volume: 87.09K
BUY POINT: New: 3.98 (orig. $3.88) Volume=125K Target=$4.85 Stop=$3.44

Play Date: 08/21/2003
QCOM (Qualcom--$39.6; +0.62; optionable): Telecom equipment
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/q/qcom.html
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. Looking very good, tapping the 18 day MVA on the intraday low (38.06) and then rallying hard to post a gain on rising, above average volume. Strong money flow and solid 3 to 1 accumulation in the 7 week base. Making the move and ready for positions on a further move up.
Volume: 12.002M Avg Volume: 25.772M
BUY POINT: New: $39.72 (orig. $39.58) Volume=12M Target=$47.55 Stop=$37.58

Play Date: 08/23/2003
WONE (Wire One Technologies--$3.3; 0; no options): Telecom services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/w/wone.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. Straining at the bit to get over 3.50 as WONE tests the breakout from its first base off the low after peaking in November 2001. The base is 8.5 months long and accumulation is excellent at 9 to 2 (9 up weeks on rising volume to 2 down weeks on rising volume). Huge volume Monday and paused Tuesday on lower, average volume. Looks ready to go but need to see the break higher on rising volume.
Volume: 115K Avg Volume: 99.909K

SLM (SLM Corp.--$40.25; +0.65; optionable): Student loans
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/slm.html
STATUS: Put. Sold further Monday but then a low volume rally back toward the 50 day MVA (40.68) Tuesday. This is the test of the breakdown that we like to see. Looking for another pop higher to tap at the 50 day and then a rollover on rising volume. That is where we enter.

UOPX: Forecast to announce a split on 9-22 with earnings.
New Pre-Announcement Plays:
Play Date: 08/26/2003
FDS (Factset Research--$48.3; -0.14; optionable): Computer software information and delivery. Forecast to announce a split on 9-16-03 in conjunction with earnings.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2 for 1 split on 1-13-00 at a stock price of $69.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/f/fds.html
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. Might be a bit early, but we really like the pattern as FDS consolidates after making a new high in July. It has used the 50 day MVA (44.74) as the two bottoms in the pattern, indicating that big money moved in each time it hit that level. Money flow is solid and relative strength is ready for a breakout.
Volume: 281.1K Avg Volume: 385.681K
BUY POINT: $49.59 Volume=600K Target=$59 Stop=$47
POSITION: FDS LJ - Dec. $50c (48 delta) &/or Stock

Continuing Pre-Announcement Plays:
Play Date: 08/16/2003
BBBY (Bed, Bath & Beyond--$42.29; -0.24; optionable): Home furnishings. Forecast to announce a split on 9-24-03 in conjunction with earnings. The company has not confirmed this date, but based upon our research this is the date for the announcement.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2 for 1 split on 7-13-00 in conjunction with a board meeting. The stock price was $39. The annual shareholder meeting was on 6-26-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/bbby.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. BBBY is indeed forming a handle to its 3 month base sporting 3 to 2 accumulation. Tuesday the stock sold down to tap just below the 10 day MVA (41.58) and then rallied back on rising though still below average volume. It may take a few more days to complete the handle, but the action is good and we want to be ready on the breakout.
Volume: 2.95M Avg Volume: 3.413M
BUY POINT: Breakout: $43.68 Volume=5.2M Target=$50 Stop=$39.28
POSITION: BHQ KH - Nov. $40c (58 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/bbby.html
Play Date: 07/19/2003
COCO (Corinthian Colleges--$56.01; +1.69; optionable): Education and training. Forecast to announce a split on 8-27-03 in conjunction with earnings.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2 for 1 split on 4-25-02 in conjunction with earnings. The stock price was $53.25. The annual shareholder meeting was on 11-21-02 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/coco.html
STATUS: Flying plateau. COCO shook us out Monday, but was right back in the game Tuesday, moving back up on rising, above average volume. It tried to move over the 10 day MVA (56.27) on the high but faded back some. Still a good recovery after Barron's had value concerns about the education and training stocks. We like the strong action right back up and will be looking at taking some positions on a move over the 10 day MVA Wednesday. COCO broke out of a 5 month base in April and rallied up the 50 day MVA since. It peaked out at 52 to start the month, and has moved laterally between 50 and 52 since as volume has fallen back below average. Accumulation was a solid 6 to 3 in the earlier base, setting up the foundation for this move. Money flow remains strong as is relative strength.
Volume: 1.28M Avg Volume: 810.272K
BUY POINT: Aggressive: $56.74; Volume=1.2M Target=$65.55 Stop=$49.24
POSITION: UCS KK - Nov. $55c (64 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/coco.html
Play Date: 07/31/2003
CPWM (Cost Plus World Market--$39.23; +1.08; optionable): Discount variety stores. No announcement on 8-21-03 with earnings. Trying to pinpoint the next possible date.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 3 for 2 split on 9-20-99 at a stock price of $47.The annual shareholder meeting was on 6-19-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cpwm.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Starting the move up in the handle, rallying off an 18 day MVA test on the Tuesday low (37.75). Volume was below average on the move, not what it needs to be. Still a solid 7 week pattern, and it looks ready to provide the breakout and move to a new high.
Volume: 222.677K Avg Volume: 257.5K
BUY POINT: $40.06 Volume=375K Target=$48 Stop=$37.94
POSITION: CUS KH - Nov. $40c (37 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/cpwm.html
Play Date: 08/12/2003
DG (Dollar General--$20.44; +0.37; optionable): Discount variety. Forecast to announce a split on 8-28-03 before the market opens in conjunction with earnings.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 5 for 4 split on 4-25-00 at a stock price of $23. The annual shareholder meeting was on 6-2-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/d/dg.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. After a quick, orderly breakout test that held above the 10 day MVA (19.85), DG started higher Tuesday on rising, above average volume. Excellent money flow and a relative strength breakout on the move. We are looking to add to positions on a solid move Wednesday on any announcement.
Volume: 1.648M Avg Volume: 1.9M
BUY POINT: New: $20.55 (orig. $19.85) Volume=2.9M Target=$23.88 Stop=$19.58

KSWS (K-Swiss--$38.62; -0.38; optionable): Athletic shoes. Forecast to announce a 2 for 1 split on 10-28-03 in conjunction with earnings. The company has not confirmed this date, but based upon our research this is the date for the release.
BACKGROUND: Last split 2 for 1 split in June 2002 at $45. Before that it announced a 2:1 split on 2-8-99 at a stock price of $46.15. The annual shareholder meeting was on 5-22-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/k/ksws.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. KSWS is trying to make the move, rallying off the 18 day MVA (37.66) Monday on rising, above average volume, and then gapping higher Wednesday as well. It could not hold the move either session, but it is showing a lot of life and we expect it to make the breakout. It is trying to make the move from a 6 week base that follows the breakout and run from a 6 month base spanning November to April. Accumulation is positive at 2:1 in the short base, and this is on top of good buying all the way up.
Volume: 210.055K Avg Volume: 197.318K
BUY POINT: $39.19 Volume=284K Target=$47 Stop=$37.32
POSITION: SWU AH - Jan. $40c (39 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 08/19/2003
PIXR (Pixar--$71.02; +0.03; optionable): Multimedia movies. Still researching a date.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/pixr.html
BACKGROUND: According to our research PIXR has never announced a split.
STATUS: Testing the breakout. PIXR broke from a 6 week flat base Thursday on a huge volume move and is now making a lower volume test. Tuesday it tapped the 10 day MVA on the low (69.50) and then rallied back to post a slight gain. Strong money flow and a relative strength breakout as well. This is a nice test of the move and we are looking at additional positions on s further move on above average volume.
Volume: 346.929K Avg Volume: 794.136K
BUY POINT: New: $71.55 (orig. $70.68) Volume=1.1M Target=$81 Stop=$68.22

UOPX (University of Phoenix Online--$60.25; +0.82; optionable): Online education. Forecast to announce a split on 9-22-03 before the market opens in conjunction with earnings.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 4 for 3 split on 4-5-02 at a stock price of $38.95. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/u/uopx.html
STATUS: Testing the 18 day MVA. UOPX was caught up in the Barron's APOL valuation issue over the weekend, and since UOPX is a spinoff of APOL, it took some heat as well. It fell to the 18 day MVA (59.12) on lower volume, held, and started back up Tuesday. On the drop it held over the July highs at 57.50. This stock can race like the wind, and this is a good level for it to make a move from.

COH (Coach--$55.04; +0.11; optionable): Handbags and such. Splits 2:1 on 10-2-03
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/coh.html
STATUS: Flat base. Tested below the 18 day MVA (54.48) on the low and then recovered for a small gain on rising volume. Looks as if COH is ready to move back up, giving us an entry point here. One of the stronger retailers.
Volume: 508K Avg Volume: 878.5K

POOL (SCP Pool--$39.94; -0.27; optionable): Basic materials. Splits 3:2 on 9-15-03.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/pool.html
STATUS: Tuesday POOL gapped lower and tapped support at 39 on the low and then rebounded and recovered most of its loss as volume jumped back up. One heck of a shakeout. If it can run through the buy point on continued strong volume it is a good ride for a pre-split.
Volume: 307.574K Avg Volume: 173.272K

RARE (Rare Hospitality--$36.81; +0.46; optionable): Restaurants. Splits 3:2 on 9-3-03
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/r/rare.html
STATUS: Breakout test. After a strong surge last week RARE sold back to test the move, holding support at the 10 day MVA (36.32) and price support at 36. Tuesday it started back up but volume was not there. Looking for volume to improve as RARE moves higher from this test. Accumulation in the short lateral base is a solid 3 to 1.

STATUS: Testing the breakout. SNPS looks as if it is completing the test of the break higher last week, coming back to test price support at 65 and the 18 day MVA (65.65). It showed a nice hammer doji and posted a small gain on rising, above average volume as it made the comeback. Looks ready to go again. This one can fly when it gets going.
