Upside:
Play Date: 08/28/2003
ANEN (Anaren--$11.51; +0.28; optionable): Scientific & technical instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/anen.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. ANEN is working toward the breakout from a 9 month base showing strong 11 to 4 accumulation (11 up weeks on rising volume to 4 down weeks on rising volume). A very nice pattern with money flow already moving up ahead of price even as the stock moves laterally in the 7 week handle. That is a positive divergence and it often precedes a breakout in price. ANEN just made a higher low at the 18 day MVA (11.10) and started higher Thursday on a huge volume spike. Looking for it to continue with this strong volume and deliver the breakout.

Money flow is strong as CDN moves toward the breakout. Volume has swelled the past week as it moves up toward the breakout, rising sharply Thursday as CDN started the breakout move. Looking to take positions on a move from here on strong volume.

DST (DST Systems--$39.5; +0.27; optionable): Information delivery software
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/d/dst.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. DST is now forming the handle to a 10 week base. Accumulation in the base is an outstanding 4 to 0; it has been all steady accumulation as the stock has moved more or less laterally in the base. Money flow is excellent, breaking out as the stock moves laterally the past two sessions on lower volume. Relative strength is excellent and ready to breakout as well. It may take a few more sessions to form the handle, but we want to be ready for the move when it comes.
Volume: 469K Avg Volume: 869.59K

HBIO (Harvard Bioscience--$5.25; +0.01; no options): Scientific & technical instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/h/hbio.html
STATUS: Testing the breakout. HBIO continues in the lateral move over the 18 day MVA (5), testing that level on the intraday lows and rebounding. Thursday HBIO showed a doji on a sharp increase in volume to above average levels. Money flow and relative strength are breaking out. Now we look for the stock to follow them.

PLXT (PLX Technology--$5.5; +0.16; optionable): Semiconductor integrated circuits
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/plxt.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. PLXT continues to work in a very nice 8 week handle to its 9 month base. Volume has trailed off during the formation of the handle, but is swelling as it rises toward the breakout point. That is just the action you want to see as it moves toward the breakout. Solid money flow and excellent accumulation in the base set the foundation for a breakout.
Volume: 158.142K Avg Volume: 232.636K

PIXR: No split with earnings.
ROST: Still researching a new date. Surged on stronger volume after a move up the 10 day MVA. Not the best entry point as it continues to move higher with no pullback.
SYK: No split announced with earnings on 7-16. Trying to move off the 50 day MVA and getting a bit more volume but still needs work.
UOPX: Forecast to announce a split on 9-22 with earnings. Exploded higher on huge volume!
XRAY: Forecast to announce 1-21-03.
New Pre-Announcement Plays:
Play Date: 08/28/2003
XRAY (Dentsply--$44.08; +1.01; optionable): Dental supplies. Forecast to announce a split on 10-21-03 in conjunction with earnings. The company has not confirmed this date, but based upon our research this is the date for the release.
BACKGROUND: Last announce a 3 for 2 split on 12-12-01 at a stock price of $46.08. The annual shareholder meeting was on 5-13-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/x/xray.html
STATUS: Flat base. XRAY is moving in a 7 week flat base over the 50 day MVA (42.12) after the breakout from a 9 month base in July. Solid money flow and relative strength is moving higher even as the stock moves laterally. It may take another week or so, but it was moving higher Friday on rising though still below average volume. We want to be ready when it does make the move.
Volume: 266.976K Avg Volume: 434.454K
BUY POINT: $44.65 Volume=625K Target=$53.55 Stop=$43.05

BBBY (Bed, Bath & Beyond--$43.36; +0.7; optionable): Home furnishings. Forecast to announce a split on 9-24-03 in conjunction with earnings. The company has not confirmed this date, but based upon our research this is the date for the announcement.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2 for 1 split on 7-13-00 in conjunction with a board meeting. The stock price was $39. The annual shareholder meeting was on 6-26-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/bbby.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. BBBY formed a short handle to its 3 month cup base, starting higher Thursday toward a breakout but unable to muster any greater volume as it did. Accumulation is 3 to 2 . It needs more volume to on the breakout attempt.
Volume: 2.264M Avg Volume: 3.454M
BUY POINT: Breakout: $43.68 Volume=5.2M Target=$50 Stop=$39.28
POSITION: BHQ KH - Nov. $40c (58 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/bbby.html
Play Date: 07/31/2003
CPWM (Cost Plus World Market--$40.15; +0.54; optionable): Discount variety stores. No announcement on 8-21-03 with earnings. Trying to pinpoint the next possible date.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 3 for 2 split on 9-20-99 at a stock price of $47.The annual shareholder meeting was on 6-19-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cpwm.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. CPWM is moving on stronger volume, but volume backed off Thursday as it moved to the buy point. That is not what we need to see as it traded to 40.95 on the high and then faded back. Money flow is strong, moving up ahead of the stock and relative strength is breaking out. It is ready to make the run, it just needs the volume.
Volume: 248.961K Avg Volume: 261.636K
BUY POINT: $40.06 Volume=375K Target=$48 Stop=$37.94
POSITION: CUS KH - Nov. $40c (37 delta) &/or Stock

FDS (Factset Research--$48.49; +0.35; optionable): Computer software information and delivery. Forecast to announce a split on 9-16-03 in conjunction with earnings.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2 for 1 split on 1-13-00 at a stock price of $69.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/f/fds.html
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. A very nice, tight handle has formed to the 7 week base that has used the 50 day MVA (45.02) as support. Money flow is solid and relative strength is ready for a breakout. We are just waiting for a strong breakout on volume.

POSITION: FDS LJ - Dec. $50c (48 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 08/23/2003
KSWS (K-Swiss--$39.4; +0.57; optionable): Athletic shoes. Forecast to announce a 2 for 1 split on 10-28-03 in conjunction with earnings. The company has not confirmed this date, but based upon our research this is the date for the release.
BACKGROUND: Last split 2 for 1 split in June 2002 at $45. Before that it announced a 2:1 split on 2-8-99 at a stock price of $46.15. The annual shareholder meeting was on 5-22-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/k/ksws.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Volume is rallying the past several sessions as KSWS moves up to the buy point. It has rallied, but it is not breakout quality. It is trying to make the move from a 6 week base that follows the breakout and run from a 6 month base spanning November to April. Accumulation is positive at 2:1 in the short base, and this is on top of good buying all the way up. Relative strength is making a breakout and we are looking for the stock to follow it but need to see stronger volume.
Volume: 153.264K Avg Volume: 201.5K
BUY POINT: New: 39.65 (orig. $39.19) Volume=284K Target=$47 Stop=$37.32

NDN (99 Cents Only Stores--$35.34; +0.55; optionable): Discount variety stores. Forecast to announce a split on 10-7-03 in conjunction with earnings. The company has not confirmed these dates but based upon our research these are the dates for the events.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 4 for 3 stock split on 3-12-02 at a stock price of $34.76. The annual shareholder meeting was on 6-13-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/n/ndn.html
STATUS: Flat base. Another retailer that has formed up a solid pattern in anticipation of improving economic conditions, NDN is working through an 11 week base using the 50 day MVA (33.83) as support. It has made a higher low the past two weeks, holding over the 18 day MVA (34.51). That is often an indication of an upside move ahead. Thursday volume was much stronger, rising to average as it moved up off the short term MVA. As with all stocks at this stage, all it needs is a strong volume surge as it moves through the buy point.
Volume: 473.4K Avg Volume: 513.136K
BUY POINT: New: $35.55 (orig. $35.12) Volume=800K Target=$42.25 Stop=$4.08

PIXR (Pixar--$72.16; +0.61; optionable): Multimedia movies. Still researching a date.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/pixr.html
BACKGROUND: According to our research PIXR has never announced a split.
STATUS: Testing the breakout. PIXR broke from a 6 week flat base last week on a huge volume move and after a lateral test it is now moving higher on rising though still below average volume. It looks ready to make the next move. Strong money flow and a relative strength breakout as well. Volume is rising but it needs to be stronger on the next move higher.
Volume: 529.908K Avg Volume: 798.272K
BUY POINT: New: $72.62 (orig. $70.68) Volume=1.1M Target=$81 Stop=$68.22

Play Date: 07/31/2003
CECO (Career Education--$45.45; +2.44; optionable): Education and training services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/ceco.html
STATUS: 50 day MVA test. CECO sold off on the APOL Barron's downgrade and COCO's earnings not being as stupendous as some wanted. It tested toward the 50 day MVA (40.20) but never made it that far before the buyers returned and shot it back up Thursday on strong, above average volume. These stocks continue to be leaders, and we are using this as another entry point to build into a winner.
Volume: 1.492M Avg Volume: 1.702M
BUY POINT: $45.88 Volume=1M Target=$52.50 Stop=$43.82

STATUS: Flat base. SBUX is trying to make the move out of its 8 week flat base, moving off the 18 day MVA (26.96) on rising though still below average volume. Strong money flow and excellent 4 to 0 accumulation in the new base. Ready to break over the late July high (27.77), and when it does on volume that is the next entry point.
Volume: 2.866M Avg Volume: 3.272M
BUY POINT: $27.88 Volume=6M Target=$33 Stop=$25.94
POSITION: SQX AY - Jan. 27.50c (56 delta) &/or Stock
