THE PLAYS

In each report we prepare full write-ups for those that look ready to move. If the move has been made already we discuss the play in the summary table. The purpose is to focus on the next good movers. New pre-announcement plays are found in that section.

Good movers Thursday: ACV; CFC; ZMH; ERES; LM; ORLY

NEW PLAYS: This section includes new plays from all sections other than pre-announcements.

New Pre-Splits: New buy points on some current plays.

BSX (Boston Scientific--$65.23; +0.69; optionable): Medical instruments. Splits 2:1 on 11-6-03
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/bsx.html
STATUS: Test 50 day MVA. BSX is working laterally over the 50 day MVA (63.39), trying to come off of the bottom of a short 4 week base it has formed after peaking in mid-September at 68.50. It has been moving laterally over support at 62.50 on low, below average volume, consolidating the move. Volume has edged higher the past two sessions, indicating that BSX may be ready to make the break higher.

This market pullback the rest of the week was perfect for a test, and TXN came back to fill the gap and then started higher Thursday on strong trade. The fact that it ignored the tech sector and the troubles in the chip equipment sector shows its underlying strength. Ready to move in on a further rally on volume.

New Pre-Announcement Plays:

Play Date: 10/23/2003
DLTR (Dollar Tree--$37.5; +0.81; optionable): Discount variety stores.
BACKGROUND: A habitual splitter through 2000 (4 splits in 5 years), DLTR is approaching its split price once again.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/d/dltr.html
STATUS: Cup. DLTR is forming a nice 7 week cup base, just starting to move up to form the right side of the base. Volume has suddenly come to life the past three sessions, a signal of the formation of the right side of the base. It is moving up off the 50 day MVA (35.68), a natural place to enter a strong stock Solid 3 to 1 accumulation in the base that is acting as the handle to a much larger 17 month double bottom pattern. That is a good accumulation base, and we are looking to pick DLTR up here on a further move higher on a solid volume surge.
Volume: 1.589M Avg Volume: 1.529M
BUY POINT: $37.92 Volume=2.3M Target=$45.55 Stop=$35.94

STATUS: Breakout. ACV came back on low volume to test the 10 day MVA (61.57) and then shot higher Thursday on a strong volume move after good earnings results. This is a very strong stock in a strong uptrend, and we are looking for further positions on a continued volume move.

It managed to break back over the 50 day MVA Wednesday and continued the move Thursday. We want to see it break some resistance at 59 for new positions.

ORLY (Oreilly Automotive--$39.8; +1.34; optionable): Retail auto parts stores. Forecast to announce a split on 10-28-03 after the close in conjunction with earnings or on 11-6-03 in conjunction with a board meeting. BACKGROUND: VRTS has announced a split every year from 1995 to 2000. Announced a 3 for 2 split on 9-4-97 at a stock price of $47. The annual shareholder meeting was on 5-6-03 at which time no additional shares were authorized. The company has sufficient shares for a 2 for 1 split.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/v/vrts.html
STATUS: Reverse head and shoulders. Strong move higher Thursday on the earnings news, but gave back a chunk of the gain. It is trying to make the breakout from its 7 week base and was close Thursday. The action was in a weak tech market, and with the good news we anticipate VRTS will continue the move and make the strong breakout.
