THE PLAYS

Good movers Monday: CRIS; GOOG

Weekend play results:
GISX: Volume surged again as GISX remains poised to breakout.
HURC: Nice doji at the 18 day EMA.
STN: Good early surge but then reversed to give back the gain and more.
UCOMA: Volume backed off as UCOMA took a breather, holding steady.

New Plays:

Upside:

Play Date: 12/20/2004
AVN (Avanir Pharma--$3.34; +0.04; no options): Drugs
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/avn.html
STATUS: Flat base/pennant. AVN is making a low volume, lateral move following its massive break higher in August. A nice, low volume 7 week lateral move to consolidate the breakout shows solid 3 to 1 accumulation (3 up price weeks on rising volume to 1 down price weeks on rising volume) as it moves laterally over the 50 day EMA (3.18). Volume has jumped the past three sessions as it held the 50 day and started its bounce. Strong volume is leading higher, and looks as if AVN is ready to make the break from this breakout consolidation.

BUY POINT: $3.55 Volume=1.1M Target=$4.48 Stop=$3.31

Play Date: 12/20/2004
ELBO (Electronics Boutique--$38.84; +0.19; optionable): Electronics stores specializing in games
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/e/elbo.html
STATUS: Breakout test. Moving laterally the past 6 weeks, holding the 18 day EMA (38.84) in a very narrow range on below average volume. This current pattern is the consolidation of the early November breakout from a 14 month double bottom with handle base sporting solid 12 to 8 accumulation. Volume is starting to pick up the last few sessions, spiking above average Monday. Going to be patient and let it show us the high volume move through the buy point.
Volume: 604.4K Avg Volume: 400K
BUY POINT: $40.12 Volume=600K Target=$48 Stop=$38.74
POSITION: LQB DH - Apr. $40c (48 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 12/20/2004
VSAT (Viasat--$22.41; -0.44; optionable): Digital satellite communications, wireless networking equipment
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/v/vsat.html
STATUS: Double bottom. VSAT has formed a double bottom off the lows of a 10 month base, breaking out Thursday on a strong volume surge. It has come back slightly on lower volume the past two sessions, holding most of the gains after the break over the 200 day SMA (21.58) last week. Accumulation in the base is a strong 19 to 6, showing solid buying during the base. Looking for the volume to kick back in as the stock continues the breakout move.
Volume: 177.027K Avg Volume: 166.136K
BUY POINT: $23.32 Volume=249K Target=$27.97 Stop=$22.25
POSITION: IQS EX - May. $22.50c (55 delta) &/or Stock

Downside Plays:

Play Date: 12/20/2004
ENER (Energy Conversion Devices--$18.24; -1.43; optionable): Alternative energy products
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/e/ener.html
STATUS: Put. After a nice run after an October breakout, ENER has reversed and sold on a couple of high volume sessions. After the first big drop the first week of December, ENER held the 50 day EMA (18.96), working laterally as it tried to regroup. Monday that regrouping fell apart as ENER fell through the 50 day on rising, average volume. Things continue to take a turn for the worse. We are looking at taking positions on an additional drop from here, or if it bounces up to test the 50 day first, all the better. Does not have to drop very far for us to lock in a nice 40+% gain.
Volume: 479.6K Avg Volume: 475K
BUY POINT: $18.11 Volume=500K Target=$16 Stop=$18.95
POSITION: EQI ND - Feb. $20p (-65 delta)

SUBSCRIBER PORTFOLIO: These are stocks subscribers suggest by vote that we put in a portfolio to track and move into the stocks if they perform well. If you have any suggestions for additions or deletions, email us. We don't cover them all each report, just when something interesting is developing.

BR, COH, EASI, EBAY, GTRC, HDWR, JNPR, MSFT, QCOM

EBAY: Continues the lateral move over the 18 day EMA on low, below average volume.

MSFT: Steady as she goes, holding at the 18 day EMA as it continues its lateral move this month.

SUBSCRIBER WATCHLIST

We continually receive ideas for potential plays from subscribers. Many times they are already on our watchlists, other times not. We always take a look and sometimes find a gem or two, or more. We don't necessarily endorse these, but want to provide a forum for subscribers with ideas that may appeal to other subscribers. We may just put on the ticker or we might describe our thoughts as to why or why not we think it is a buy or sell. This is a way we can all learn a bit more and maybe find a few more candidates to make us some good money.

Upside:

LEND: Broke sharply higher to end November and has moved more or less laterally the past three weeks. Volume jumped Monday as it rallied but then gave up most of the gain. Still quite solid.

TIBX: Broke out in October and rallied up the 18 day EMA. It is making its third test of the 18 day, coming back on lower volume to test that level. Strong stocks make 4 to 5 bounces up the 18 day before needed a deeper test.
