THE PLAYS
Good movers Tuesday: ASTM; DADE; DUSA; ESLR; IMAX; JKHY; NTAP; STEM; STN
Weekend play results:
ESLR: Nice surge continues on volume.
IPMT: Still a nice pullback to test the 10 day EMA
STEM: Excellent break higher off 10 day EMA.
MTLM: Doji right at the 18 day EMA.
New Plays:
Upside:
Play Date: 01/18/2005
AFFX (Affymetrix--$36.99; +0.87; optionable): Scientific & technical instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/affx.html
After Hours: $37.38
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Volume is starting to edge higher as AFFX works toward the breakout from its 5 week handle to the nice looking 9 month base. Excellent 11 to 4 accumulation (11 up price weeks on rising volume to 4 down price weeks on rising volume) shows net buyers during the base and has set up the breakout. Nice pattern; just waiting for the breakout on strong volume.
Volume: 786.658K Avg Volume: 855.318K
BUY POINT: $37.35 Volume=1.3M Target=$43 Stop=$35.79
POSITION: FIQ EG - May $35c (68 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 01/18/2005
HTCH (Hutchinson Technology--$35.81; +0.87; optionable): PC data storage devices
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/h/htch.html
After Hours: $35.71
STATUS: Cup w/handle. HTCH has rebounded off of a 50 day EMA (33.26) test this past week, rallying on much stronger, above average volume. The move the past 6 weeks has formed a handle to a larger 12 month base. HTCH has moved to the breakout point on strong trade. Money flow is excellent, leading higher in a nice positive divergence. Looking for the stock to take out the early December high (36.20) on continued strong volume and give us a solid entry point.
Volume: 628.193K Avg Volume: 372.772K
BUY POINT: $36.32 Volume=600K Target=$42 Stop=$33.97
POSITION: UTQ EG - May $35c (61 delta) &/or Stock

IVIL (Ivillage--$6.75; +0.33; optionable): Online and off-line media geared toward women
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/i/ivil.html
After Hours: $6.73
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. Volume was up Tuesday as IVIL broke over a 5 week consolidation just over the 200 day SMA (5.88). This consolidation was the handle to a 9.5 week pattern. Positive accumulation in the base and money flow rallying out in front of price. Looking to move in on a further volume move. Nice thing is, it can give us a good gain without having to clear the April high that marks the top of the base.
Volume: 990.612K Avg Volume: 588.318K
BUY POINT: $6.87 Volume=700K Target=$9 Stop=$6.39
POSITION: JUR DA - Apr. $5c (90 delta) &/or Stock

SUBSCRIBER PORTFOLIO: These are stocks subscribers suggest by vote that we put in a portfolio to track and move into the stocks if they perform well. If you have any suggestions for additions or deletions, email us. We don't cover them all each report, just when something interesting is developing.
BR, COH, EASI, EBAY, GTRC, HDWR, JNPR, MSFT, QCOM
EASI: Volume was better as it still trades in a tight range over the 18 day EMA after filling the gap.
EBAY: Moved higher but on lower volume as it comes back up toward the 50 day EMA test. Earnings out Wednesday after the close, and there is some nervousness ahead of this. Word is sales were very strong over the holidays.
GTRC: Had come back to test the move but holds most of the big break higher to start the year.
SUBSCRIBER WATCHLIST
We continually receive ideas for potential plays from subscribers. Many times they are already on our watchlists, other times not. We always take a look and sometimes find a gem or two, or more. We don't necessarily endorse these, but want to provide a forum for subscribers with ideas that may appeal to other subscribers. We may just put on the ticker or we might describe our thoughts as to why or why not we think it is a buy or sell. This is a way we can all learn a bit more and maybe find a few more candidates to make us some good money.
Upside:
BCII: Looks to be preparing for a continuation of the early December breakout from a 7.5 month base, moving laterally the past three weeks.
SSI: Nice 6 week lateral base formed above the 50 day EMA.
Downside:
MT: Lower volume rally to test the breakdown from the 50 day EMA to start the month.
