NXTP: Gapped higher on word S would try to acquire all of the remaining interests but then faded.

New Plays:

Upside:

Play Date: 08/17/2005
AMT (American Tower--$22.71; +0.03; optionable): Telecom towers
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/amt.html
STATUS: Breakout test. Broke out in late June from a 15 week cup with handle and has rallied well. This is AMT's second deeper test of the break higher, and instead of a pullback to the 50 day EMA down at 21.20 it has formed a lateral range over the 18 day EMA (22.41) and below 23. Excellent strength by this leader in a selling market, holding its gains while the market does not. It is set up well to continue the break higher, making a higher low just over the 10 day EMA (22.61), showing a tight doji Wednesday at that level.
Volume: 1.18M Avg Volume: 3.4M
BUY POINT: $23.38 Volume=5.1M Target=$26.88 Stop=$22.31
POSITION: AMT AX - Jan. $22.50c (59 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 08/17/2005
MCHP (Microchip--$31.02; +0.28; optionable): Semiconductors
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/mchp.html
After Hours: $31.23
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Broke out from an 8 month double bottom with handle base in early July and rallied near 33. After that move it has come back to test the 50 day EMA (30.69), moving laterally along that level the past two weeks. Money flow continues to move up ahead of the stock as it makes this test; that often means the stock is going to follow it higher. Started to move Tuesday but volume was not there yet. Expecting to see it, however, as MCHP breaks through the 18 day EMA (31.03).
Volume: 1.282M Avg Volume: 1.611M
BUY POINT: $31.22 Volume=1.7M Target=$35.95 Stop=$30.44
POSITION: QMT AF - Jan. $30c (61 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 08/17/2005
MSCC (Microsemi--$23.38; +0.79; optionable): Semiconductor integrated circuits
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/mscc.html
STATUS: Breakout test. MSCC made us some money in its earlier move, and after pulling back to consolidate that move this month it has bolted higher Wednesday on strong, above average volume. This is the second big leg following the breakout from a 6 month double bottom with handle base in May and then a test of the 50 day EMA (21.21) in early July. Strong money flow is leading and a relative strength breakout gives the move good corroboration. Looking to start the position on a further move.
Volume: 1.262M Avg Volume: 881.88K
BUY POINT: $23.54 Volume=900K Target=$27 Stop=$22.29
POSITION: QMS LX - Dec. $22.50c (60 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 08/17/2005
VAS (Viasys Healthcare--$24.76; +0.56; optionable): Medical equipment
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/v/vas.html
STATUS: Breakout test. A new issue in late 2001, VAS is preparing to break to another new all-time high. It broke out from a 9 week cup with handle base that formed over the 50 day EMA (23.65). It rallied to 25 on the first move and has come back to test and hold the 18 day EMA (24.43). Volume spiked higher Monday as VAS logged a gain. It fell Tuesday as it faded, and then leaped higher Wednesday as VAS posted another gain. With strong money flow leading the way and the 'get ready' volume spikes we anticipate VAS making the next breakout soon.
Volume: 562.2K Avg Volume: 164.636K
BUY POINT: $25.25 Volume=247K Target=$28.75 Stop=$23.97
POSITION: VAS AE - Jan. $25c (54 delta) &/or Stock
