Begin part 3 of 3

THE PLAYS

Good Movers: DNR; FIC; FTO; HAE; NTGR; VLO; WITS; CFC; RTH; SONC

Tuesday night play results:
CASY: Continued higher on above average volume, but traded all over the map.
ISRG: Doji on lower volume.
RECN: Gapped higher but could not continue the move.
VTIV: Continued the move higher.

Upside:

Play Date: 09/28/2005
BOOM (Dynamic Materials--$41.03; -0.42; no options): Industrial metals. Splits 2:1 on 10-11-2005
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/boom.html
After Hours: $41.04
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. A confluence of positives: a great pattern has set up as BOOM moves toward its split. That should provide quite a show. Nice 7 week pattern has set up, starting to form a handle the past two sessions as BOOM eases back on lower, below average volume. Strong 3 to 1 accumulation in the pattern (3 up price weeks on rising volume to 1 down price week on rising volume) shows continued buying during the base. Money flow is heading higher ahead of price. It may take another session or two, but BOOM is ready to go boom. Poet laureate tonight.

AUY (Yamana Gold--$4.26; +0.05; no options): Gold mining
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/auy.html
STATUS: Breakout test. AUY broke out two weeks back, moving out of an 8 week base that formed over the 50 day EMA (3.99). This followed an 18 week cup with handle; nice base on base pattern that really weeds out the sellers. Strong volume on the breakout and a nice lower volume test that held near support at the 18 day EMA (4.18). That is where strong stocks typically hold on their breakout tests. Nice doji on the candlestick chart Wednesday looks to have set the stage for the continued breakout run. Ready to move in as AUY continues higher off this test.

Downside:

Play Date: 09/28/2005
SBUX (Starbucks--$47.98; -0.57; optionable): High-priced coffees, lattes, etc. Splits 2:1 on 10-24-05.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/sbux.html
After Hours: $47.98
STATUS: Put. Yes it is moving into the split, but this is one that SBUX threw in gratuitously. It is well off its recent high hit in December, trending consistently lower. After breaking below the 200 day SMA (52.50) in early July it has trended below the 50 day EMA (49.45), using that as periodic resistance. It just rallied up to that level and turned over this week. Wednesday SBUX was selling on rising volume. Looking to move in as it breaks lower and moves below the 10 day EMA (47.96). A move to the target lands us a 44%ish gain.

Play Date: 09/28/2005
XLY (Consumer Discretionary Spyder--$31.95; -0.29; optionable)
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/x/xly.html
STATUS: Put. The consumer still has to eat and drink, but with gasoline prices high and getting higher even after a long stint the discretionary dollars are the ones that are diverted into the gas tank or are held back for fear of worse times ahead. XLY formed a head and shoulders spanning June to early September. It broke down two weeks back, then rebounded to the 10 day EMA (32.40). It stalled there and Wednesday was falling on a big volume surge. Ripe to move lower, and does not have to fall too far to give us a nice gain. A move to the target lands us a 40%ish gain.
