THE PLAYS
Good movers: AAPL; AMX; HYSL; TXN
Thursday night play results:
HYDL: Modest gain on continued strong volume but not the breakout move yet.
TERN: Held steady on low volume, still preparing for the next move as it rebounds from the test.
WLT: Started higher on some more solid volume but gave back almost all the move.
PSYS: Volume jumped back to average and PSYS started higher, but it could not hold it into the close.
Upside:
Play Date: 10/01/2005
ARRS (Arris Group--$11.86; +0.66; optionable): Telecom equipment
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/arrs.html
After Hours: $11.79
STATUS: Ascending base. Volume shot higher and well above average Friday as ARRS started the breakout move from its 8 week base that formed climbing up the 18 day EMA (11.18) while trying to break through 11.75ish. This pattern formed after ARRS broke out from a 18 month cup with handle in late July. As the market sold, it used the selling to set up this next base, a base on base pattern that really works to set up strong breakouts and runs. Strong 3 to 0 accumulation in the short pattern (3 up price weeks on rising volume to 0 down price weeks on rising volume) shows plenty of buying even as it moved laterally. Money flow is leading higher and relative strength broke out, a very good corroboration of the move underway. Ready to move in as ARRS continues the break higher. An 'A' rated stock in terms of sales, earnings, and pattern.

BRCM (Broadcom--$46.92; +1.16; optionable): Semiconductor integrated circuits
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/brcm.html
After Hours: $47.11
STATUS: Breakout test. In early September BRCM broke out of a long 14 month cup with handle base. It dipped sharply to the 50 day EMA (43.23) two weeks back, making a quick intraday tap at that support. It rebounded, moved laterally for a week, and then started higher Friday on stronger, average trade. Nice full test of the breakout and now it is ready to continue the breakout move. Money flow is leading higher and relative strength broke out Friday, a very good indication for the continued move from the stock. An 'A' rated stock in terms of sales, earnings, and pattern.

NETL (Netlogic Microsystems--$21.59; +0.56; optionable): Semiconductors
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/n/netl.html
After Hours: $21.59
STATUS: Ascending base. Making another play on NETL as it comes off the 50 day EMA (20.24), working toward the breakout from its 8 week ascending base that is using that 50 day EMA as support. Has bounced down off of 22ish three times during the base, and that makes that level the point to beat on a strong volume breakout. Volume has been very low and below average the past week as NETL made the test and started back up. Needs to show more strength as it rebounds. Strong 4 to 1 accumulation in the pattern is setting up the breakout move. An 'A' rated stock in terms of sales, earnings, and pattern.
Volume: 91.792K Avg Volume: 234.808K
BUY POINT: $22.24 Volume=352K Target=$26.72 Stop=$20.87
POSITION: LKT AX - Jan. $22.50c (52 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 10/01/2005
SPIR (Spire Corp.--$10.74; +0.62; no options): Biomedical, solar equipment, solar systems, and optoelectronics products
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/spir.html
After Hours: $10.65
STATUS: Ascending triangle. SPIR's business encompasses two hot areas of late in the market: alternative energy and medical equipment. It has set up a nice 10 week base using the 50 day EMA (9.44) as support, making higher and higher lows with a constant top at 11. Strong money flow is leading and accumulation is a solid 3 to 1. Volume has been very low the past four weeks as SPIR worked laterally; need to see the volume spike as it makes its breakout move. This base is consolidating a strong move higher in June and July that broke it out of a 2 year flat doldrums.
Volume: 344.621K Avg Volume: 848.728K
BUY POINT: $11.05 Volume=1.3M Target=$13.35 Stop=$10.25
POSITION: - Stock (no option chain)

SUBSCRIBER PORTFOLIO: These are stocks subscribers suggest by vote that we put in a portfolio to track and move into the stocks if they perform well. If you have any suggestions for additions or deletions, email us. We don't cover them all each report, just when something interesting is developing.
AAPL, CELG, BLUDE, BR, COH, HW, PSYS, RTSX, STN
AAPL: Benefited from some quarter ending portfolio dressing.
CELG: Still the nice test in progress. Could see a split from CELG in December.
COH: Holding over the 200 day SMA for the second time in as many weeks, trying to use this support as the bottom for a new base that is forming.
PSYS: Ready to make the move higher as volume jumped back to average Friday.
SUBSCRIBER WATCHLIST
We continually receive ideas for potential plays from subscribers. Many times they are already on our watchlists, other times not. We always take a look and sometimes find a gem or two, or more. We don't necessarily endorse these, but want to provide a forum for subscribers with ideas that may appeal to other subscribers. We may just put on the ticker or we might describe our thoughts as to why or why not we think it is a buy or sell. This is a way we can all learn a bit more and maybe find a few more candidates to make us some good money.
HOS: Shipping services. Tremendous volume Friday as HOS started the breakout from an eight week ascending base that formed using the 50 day EMA (32.68) as support. A new issue in March 2004, HOS continues moving higher and higher, this move taking it to a new all-time high.
XMSR: Working through 9 week double bottom over the 200 day SMA that is acting as the handle to a larger 9.5 month cup with handle base. Strong money flow. Setting up well.
