THE PLAYS
Good Movers: CWTR; DAKT; GILD; MRVL; SNDK
New Pre-Split Play:
Play Date: 01/05/2006
CERN (Cerner--$93.6; +0.74; optionable): Healthcare Information services. Splits 2:1 on 1-10-06.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cern.html
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. The split is coming up and CERN is perched on the 50 day EMA (90.85), ready to start its pre-split push. Got rough in mid-December, selling below the 50 day. It has recovered that support, consolidated for over a week, and is set up to make a run toward 100. A move to the target lands us a 50%ish gain.
Volume: 515.778K Avg Volume: 539.858K
BUY POINT: $94.12 Volume=650K Target=$100 Stop=$92.08
POSITION: CQN CS - Mar.$95c (50 delta)

New Post-Split Play:
Play Date: 01/05/2006
DIOD (Diodes--$33.81; +1.35; optionable): Semiconductor integrated circuits
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/d/diod.html
STATUS: Double bottom. DIOD has formed a short 3 week double bottom over the 18 day EMA (31.71) as a consolidation of its strong break higher in early December that took it out of a 13 week base. Volume was back above average Thursday as DIOD jumped higher, clearing the 'hump' in the short pattern. A strong leader in the sector with great fundamentals to compliment its pattern. Ready to move in on a further volume gain.
Volume: 375.384K Avg Volume: 345.288K
BUY POINT: $34.11 Volume=518K Target=$40.32 Stop=$32.28
POSITION: DUH FF - June $30c (71 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 01/05/2006
VSAT (Viasat--$27.50; +0.13; optionable): Telecom equipment
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/v/vsat.html
After Hours: $27.50
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Excellent 13 week base has formed using the 50 day EMA (26.32) as support; the strong stocks appear to be doing that as the market sold in December. Superb 5 to 1 accumulation in the base shows virtually all buying as it sets up for the breakout to a 5 year high. Surging money flow. Familiar volume swell this week, a good thing to see as a stock nears the breakout point. Strong pattern and strong fundamentals as well.
Volume: 182.974K Avg Volume: 181.183K
BUY POINT: $28.12 Volume=272K Target=$33.75 Stop=$26.78
POSITION: IQS EE - May $25c (72 delta) &/or Stock

Continuing Leader Play:
Play Date: 01/04/2006
INFY (Infosys Technologies--$80.43; +0.06; optionable): Technical and system software
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/i/infy.html
STATUS: Breakout test. Just an excellent test as INFY continues to hold above the 10 day EMA (80.26), showing tight dojis at that level. Great first test of the mid-December breakout from its 5.5 month double bottom with handle base. Just waiting for INFY to break higher on volume.
Volume: 675.418K Avg Volume: 669.7K
BUY POINT: $81.35 Volume=1M Target=$91.55 Stop=$79.88
POSITION: IUN DP - Apr. $80c (54 delta) &/or Stock

New Pre-Announcement Plays: The pullback in energy is giving us some good entry points.
Play Date: 01/05/2006
ATW (Atwood Oceanics--$83.7; -0.84; optionable): Oil and gas drilling. Researching exact date. Announced earnings 12-2-05.
BACKGROUND: No splits in ATW's history.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/atw.html
STATUS: Test breakout. ATW surged higher to start the new year on the buying in energy. It backed off the past two sessions, but is holding much of the gain. Strong money flow and positive accumulation have set up the breakout and run. This pullback is resetting the move and will give us an entry as ATW resumes the breakout move.
Volume: 413.2K Avg Volume: 363.642K
BUY POINT: $85.38 Volume=545K Target=$99.75 Stop=$83.35
POSITION: ATW FQ - June $85c (56 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 01/05/2006
NOV (National Oilwell--$67.91; -1.93; optionable): Oilfield equipment. Forecast in late January. Working to pinpoint a date.
BACKGROUND: No splits in NOV's history
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/n/nov.html
STATUS: Test breakout. NOV broke higher to start the new year, breaking out from a 13 week double bottom with handle base that formed around the 50 day EMA (62.75) support level. After two strong days it pulled back Thursday on lower but still above average volume. Positive accumulation and surging money flow. A relative strength breakout as well on the move. Looks as if NOV could give us another session of pullback, but we don't think it will fall too far before it resumes the upside move. Strong pattern and excellent fundamentals as well.
Volume: 2.958M Avg Volume: 2.014M
BUY POINT: $68.25 Volume=3M Target=$78.55 Stop=$66.97
POSITION: NOV EN - May $70c (54 delta) &/or Stock

Continuing Pre-Announcement Plays ready to move:
Play Date: 12/27/2005
COF (Capital One Financial--$86.44; +0.02; optionable): Credit services. Forecast third week of January 2006. Pinpointing exact date.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 3:1 split on 4-29-99 at $170. A bit early perhaps, but a good run into January will put it at a level where a 2:1 split would give it about the same ratio.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cof.html
After Hours: $86.98
STATUS: Breakout test. Still a very nice test of the breakout, holding the 18 day EMA (86.05) the past week on the lows, showing a tight doji Thursday on continued below average volume. Just being patient and waiting for the resumption of the breakout move. To recap: COF broke out two weeks back, moving out of its 20 week cup with handle base on a strong shot of volume. Last week it made a more definitive break higher and then moved laterally for three sessions. It got the dips, falling to near support on low volume. Like the first test of a breakout as an entry point because when it turns back up that tells us the big money is back in the stock. Strong money flow and a nice relative strength breakout with the price.
Volume: 1.352M Avg Volume: 2.441M
BUY POINT: Aggressive: 87.38; Next: $88.15 Volume=3M Target=$99.65 Stop=$86.15
POSITION: COF CQ - Mar. $85c (64 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/cof.html
Play Date: 12/13/2005
MATR (Matria Healthcare--$40.13; -0.2; optionable): Home health care. No word of a slit announcement Thursday. Still looking for one, but if not this week then we are checking the third week of January.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 3:2 split in 1-6-05 at $37.30.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/matr.html
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. Surged to 41.45 Thursday, but could not hold the move as it moved above resistance at 40. Very solid, and waiting for the move to continue on rising trade. To recap: Nice run over the summer into September, and then MATR needed a breather. It formed the current 13 week base, using the 200 day SMA as support. It is working laterally the past three sessions right at the 'hump' in the double bottom, forming the handle that prepares it for the breakout. Solid 3 to 1 accumulation in the pattern shows net buying and is setting the breakout move.
Volume: 270.565K Avg Volume: 264.072K
BUY POINT: New: $40.45 (orig. $38.89) Volume=392K Target=$46.45 Stop=$37.38
POSITION: PQT CG - Mar. $35c (57 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/matr.html
CONTINUING POST-SPLIT PLAYS:
Play Date: 12/28/2005
LUFK (Lufkin Industries--$52.1; +0.39; optionable): Oil and gas service company
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/l/lufk.html
STATUS: Test breakout. Holding at the 10 day EMA (51.44) on the close, dipping below that level the past two sessions and recovering on lower volume. Nice test of the breakout, and set up to make the run higher. To recap: LUFK checked up at the early December breakout point, testing lower intraday Wednesday and then rebounding to show a doji on the candlestick chart, often an indication a pullback has concluded. It does not hurt that LUFK filled the early December gap on the intraday test lower. Energy stocks are coming back to life after this correction, and LUFK has set itself back up for a move higher to continue the breakout. Solid 4 to 2 accumulation in the base (4 up price weeks on rising volume to 2 down price weeks on rising volume) shows net buying in the base that set up the breakout and the run higher. Nice test and now it is ready. Strong money flow complements the accumulation.
Volume: 180.593K Avg Volume: 250.944K
BUY POINT: New: $52.48 (orig. $51.77) Volume=376K Target=$59.95 Stop=$49.89
POSITION: UFR CJ - Mar. $50c (54 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/lufk.html
Play Date: 12/29/2005
TKC (Turkcell--$16.01; -0.06; optionable): Telecom communications
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/t/tkc.html
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. Still looking for some volume to carry TKC higher. It gapped upside Wednesday but volume hung back, coming in well below average. Thursday it gapped lower, filling the gap. Now at least that is done. Looking for some volume as it resumes the move higher. To recap: Nice12 month base and TKC is knocking at the brekaout. Top rated fundamentally to go along with the strong pattern. Excellent 14 to 5 accumulation shows plenty of buying, setting up the breakout. Ready to take some positions as TKC continues the move higher and then again on the move past 16.
Volume: 147.8K Avg Volume: 434.023K
BUY POINT: New: $16.15 (orig. $15.88) Volume=475K Target=$19.35 Stop=$15.21
POSITION: TKC DC - Apr. $15c (57 delta) &/or Stock
