CHRW (C.H. Robinson Worldwide--$40.46; +0.03; optionable): Air delivery & freight
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/chrw.html
After Hours: $40.36
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. CHRW has started a nice lateral move this week after a picture perfect 9 week base formed using the 50 day EMA (37.69) on the lows as support. Excellent 4 to 1 accumulation in the pattern (4 up price weeks on rising volume to 1 down price weeks on rising volume) has set up the breakout to a new all-time high. May take another day or two to complete the lateral move in the handle before it shows us a strong breakout move. Great pattern and great fundamentals.

PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT PLAYS

Current Pre-Announcement Plays: Lots of stocks still in position for split announcements. We have some good information on many though some are wild cards, i.e. no split history but hearing word of a possible split announcement. All are good leadership quality stocks that can make us money if they show us the breakout moves.

This is a list of stocks we are looking to announce splits. We are not in all of the potential splits plays but are letting them set up for the next move. In each report we look at the candidates that are in the best patterns ahead of their potential announcements. This focus on leaders in good patterns allows us to make good money even if companies do not announce the split. The key with splits is the pattern.

New Pre-Announcement Plays:

Play Date: 01/31/2006
APA (Apache--$75.53; +2.34; optionable): Oil and gas. Forecast 2-2-06.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2:1 split on 9-12-03 at $66.50
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/apa.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Strong volume Tuesday as APA continued its surge off the 50 day EMA (70.40), starting the breakout from its 18 week base. Used the 50 day EMA (70.40) the past 8 weeks as support as it made the higher lows. Solid 5 to 3 accumulation shows net buying setting up the breakout. Nice pattern, right sector, at the split price.
Volume: 5.372M Avg Volume: 3.201M
BUY POINT: $76.25 Volume=3.5M Target=$87.95 Stop=$74.12
POSITION: APA GO - July $75c (53 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 01/31/2006
PTEN (Patterson-Uti Energy--$37.62; -0.23; optionable): Oil and gas drilling. Forecast 3-16-06
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2:1 split on 4-29-04 at $38.30.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/pten.html
After Hours: $37.45
STATUS: Breakout test. Coming off the 18 day EMA (36.47), trying to extend the mid-January move out of its 14 week double bottom with handle base. Made a higher low at the 18 day and getting ready to resume the move. Want to see it clear the congested area of the past two weeks with a strong volume move. Solid 5 to 3 accumulation in the base set up the move and we are just waiting for it to resume.
Volume: 1.862M Avg Volume: 3.259M
BUY POINT: $38.65 Volume=4.9M Target=$46 Stop=$36.42
POSITION: NZQ EU - May $37.50c (54 delta) &/or Stock

Continuing Pre-Announcement Plays ready to move

Play Date: 01/28/2006
BIO (Bio-rad Labs--$67.4; +0.52; optionable): Life science research products & clinical diagnostics. Forecast 2-2-06
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 2 for 1 split on 2-7-02 at a price of $57.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/bio.html
STATUS: Breakout test. Still working laterally over the 18 day EMA (66.64), reaching below that level intraday but recovering for a modest gain. Holding the lateral range, ready to make the move. To recap: Moving laterally, working along the 18 day EMA, using that as support as it consolidates the mid-December breakout from a 4.5 month cup with handle base. Strong stock as it hangs onto its gains as it consolidates, refusing to give them back. Volume started higher to end the week, after a very low volume lateral move. That often precedes the next upside move. Strong money flow is leading higher. Want to see that volume continue to move up as BIO moves through the buy point and continues the breakout run. Consistently a strong stock, evidenced by the break to a new all-time high.
Volume: 53.5K Avg Volume: 71K
BUY POINT: $68.48 Volume=115K Target=$78.85 Stop=$65.88
POSITION: BIO FN - June $70c (52 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/bio.html

Play Date: 01/30/2006
CHS (Chicos Fas--$43.56; -0.2; optionable): Apparel stores. Researching the next date.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/chs.html
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Eased back on lower, below average volume, tapping the 18 day EMA (43.22) on the low and rebounding slightly. Still in the nice pullback; Tuesday was not its day as the market dealt with the Fed issues. Looking for another strong volume break higher to give us our entry point. To recap: After an early November breakout from a 12 week double bottom with handle base, CHS rallied for three weeks but could not extend its move. It peaked at 46 and then fell into the current 10 week pullback to test the 50 day EMA (42.93) and support at 42. It ahs been a long, slow consolidation, but Monday CHS jumped back to life, bouncing off 42 on the strongest volume in three weeks. Looking for CHS to move through the next resistance level in the base to start the play. After that we will look for a test of the breakout over 46. Solid, steady market leader.
Volume: 1.464M Avg Volume: 1.918M
BUY POINT: $44.75 Volume=2.9M Target=$52.95 Stop=$42.84
POSITION: CHS EI - May $45c (50 delta) &/or Stock
http://www.investmenthouse.com/cs/chs.html

Play Date: 01/24/2006
DVA (Davita--$54.75; -0.28; optionable): Specialized health services. Forecast to announce a split 2-15-06
BACKGROUND: Announced its only 3:2 split on 5-17-04 at $46.20.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/d/dva.html
STATUS: Breakout test. Still testing the 10 day EMA (54.76) as volume rose above average for the second straight session. Strong money low. Being patient and letting it show us the break higher. To recap: Solid market leader and one of the top stocks in its group. Strong 3 to 1 accumulation complemented by surging money flow. Relative strength made the breakout as well, a good indication the breakout has some stamina to keep thrusting higher.
Volume: 825.2K Avg Volume: 551.766K
BUY POINT: $56.21 Volume=816K Target=$64.75 Stop=$54.25
POSITION: DVA GK - July $55c (57 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 01/28/2006
GVA (Granite Construction--$40.48; -0.12; optionable): Heavy construction. Forecast 2-15-06.
BACKGROUND: Last announced a 3:2 split on 2-21-01 at $32.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/g/gva.html
STATUS: Breakout test. Setting up very nicely, tapping the 10 day EMA (39.92) on the Tuesday low and rebounding for a modest loss. Volume has ratcheted to the next level the past week, often what happens as a stock starts a strong move. Just waiting for the next break higher ot continue the breakout move. To recap: It has been awhile but GVA has surpassed the prior split level for the first time, breaking out from an 18 week base last Tuesday on very strong trade. Nicely formed ascending base sporting solid 5 to 3 accumulation; net buying during the consolidation that set up the next breakout and run. After the strong move last Tuesday it stalled a bit but held its gains. Looking for it to continue higher from here and resume the breakout move. Solid money flow is leading, and relative strength broke out with the stock price, a good corroboration of its strength. Excellent fundamentals.
Volume: 288.2K Avg Volume: 219.374K
BUY POINT: $41.11 Volume=337K Target=$48.88 Stop=$39.54
POSITION: GVA FH - June $40c (54 delta) &/or Stock

CONTINUING POST-SPLIT PLAYS:

Play Date: 01/24/2006
PSYS (Psychiatric Solutions--$32.99; +0.51; optionable): Specialized health services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/p/psys.html
After Hours: $32.95
STATUS: Breakout test. Looking pretty solid Tuesday, gapping lower to the 18 day EMA (31.89) and then rebounding for a nice day. Volume remained low; needs more for us to move in. Otherwise it is ready. To recap: PSYS broke out from a 7 week base in early January, surging on strong volume. It is making its second test of that move, easing back the past three sessions on much lower volume but holding onto its gains. It does not want to give the move up, a good sign. Strong money flow is leading higher and a good relative strength breakout shows the move has some guts.
Volume: 343.033K Avg Volume: 592.124K
BUY POINT: New: $33.12 (orig. $32.88) on the rebound Volume=800K Target=$38.95 Stop=$31.77
POSITION: BYU FZ - June $32.50c (56 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 01/23/2006
SRZ (Sunrise Assisted Living--$36.35; 0; optionable): Long-term care facilities
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/srz.html
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Working laterally along the 10 day EMA (35.93) on low, below average volume. Forming a solid handle to the base. Setting up for a new all-time high. Just add volume. To recap: Still holding over the 10 day EMA, its resting point the past week as it came back to form the handle to its short 7 week base that is setting it up for a new all-time high. Used the 50 day EMA (34.71) as support, an important level for a stock to consolidate. Looking for a strong volume kick as we saw on Thursday and a move that sticks.
Volume: 210.6K Avg Volume: 366.579K
BUY POINT: New: $36.72 (orig. $36.25) Volume=565K Target=$41.95 Stop=$34.98
