New Plays:
Play Date: 05/14/2007
MTL (Mechel Steel Group--$35.79; +0.79; optionable): Steel & iron
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/mtl.html
EARNINGS: Late May
STATUS: Ascending base. MTL is making higher lows up the 50 day EMA (32.96) in its 10 week base, making a higher low the past week at the 18 day EMA (34.42). That higher low typically precedes a breakout move. Good volume accompanied the Monday bounce off that near support, a good compliment to the strong money flow that is leading higher. This stock has excellent fundamentals growth to match its solid pattern. In excellent position to make the breakout move.

SWN (Southwestern Energy--$43.71; +0.44; optionable): Independent oil and gas
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/swn.html
EARNINGS: Announced 4-30-07
STATUS: Breakout test. SWN is moving in a 7 week pennant, consolidating the early break higher from a 17 week base. It rallied to 45 on the move and then started the current test, holding the breakout point at 42 as it does. Volume backed off the past week after kicking up to start the month after the earnings report. Looking for it to break higher on some stronger volume to give us the buy point. Nice solid leader in position to make the break higher.

VMSI (Ventana Medical Sys.--$49.63; -0.31; optionable): Medical instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/v/vmsi.html
EARNINGS: Announced 4-27-07
STATUS: Breakout test. VMSI broke out from a 9 month double bottom with handle base in mid-April, and it ran higher after the breakout, moving up to 52. Made us some great money on that run and then backed off. It slid through the 10 day EMA (49.73) on the Thursday close, but it caught itself. Nice test of the breakout and looking for the break higher as VMSI continues its move. It can rally further from here; it has shown similar action in prior runs. Strong fundamentals and an excellent test.

POSITION: UMU IJ - Sept. $50c (52 delta) &/or Stock

WNR (Western Refining--$39.53; +0.18; optionable): Oil and gas refining, marketing
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/w/wnr.html
EARNINGS: Announced 5-3-07
STATUS: Ascending base. We were watching this pattern form over the past 8 weeks, consolidating the strong February and March run that made us some very nice coin. It is moving laterally at the 18 day EMA (38.72) on very low volume in a nice, tight range. It is almost the same pattern it showed December to February that led to that strong run, just a bit shorter. Nice low volume to test while the strongest sessions the past three weeks were on upside days. Looks as if some nice consolidation is ongoing. Just waiting for it to show higher volume as it breaks to the upside as it did in February.
Volume: 445.2K Avg Volume: 783.8K
BUY POINT: $40.05 Volume=1.2M Target=$48.22 Stop=$37.57
POSITION: WNR IH - Sept. $40c (51 delta) &/or Stock

SUBSCRIBER PORTFOLIO: These are stocks subscribers suggest by vote that we put in a portfolio to track and move into the stocks if they perform well. If you have any suggestions for additions or deletions, email us. We don't cover them all each report, just when something interesting is developing.
AAPL, AKAM, CELG, DRIV, GME, GOOG, ISE, MA, PCLN, NVDA, NYX
DRIV: Tapped the 90 day MA on the low and recovered to hold the 50 day MA on some rising volume. This could be the reversal that it needs to show.
GOOG: Faded back down on rising though still below average volume. It is also holding 460 where there is a range of support. It has formed something of a 6 week head and shoulders, and that makes this hold at this support important.
MA; Testing back toward the 10 day EMA on lower though still above average volume.
NVDA: Lower volume as it tested that breakout from Friday. Looking to see it gives a bit more ground toward 34 and then bounces. That gives us the entry point for new positions.
