THE PLAYS
Upside:
Play Date: 07/31/2007
SPN (Superior Energy--$40.32; +0.60; optionable): Oil and gas service company
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/spn.html
EARNINGS: 7-30-07
STATUS: Ascending base. Good earnings shot SPN higher and over its mid-June high. With this market, however, it could not hold the move. Very nice 10 week base has formed over the 50 day EMA with a tap at the 90 day SMA on Monday and a good recovery. Excellent pattern and looking for SPN to reload and break higher again, giving us a breakout that holds; a superior move.
Volume: 2.078M Avg Volume: 983.772K
BUY POINT: $41.88 Volume=1.5M Target=$48.22 Stop=$39.22
POSITION: SPN LH - Dec. $40c (61 delta) &/or Stock

Downside:
Play Date: 07/31/2007
CCK (Crown Cork & Seal--$24.56; +0.14; optionable): Packaging and containers
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cck.html
EARNINGS: 7-17-07
STATUS: Put. CCK broke higher from a 15 week ascending base two weeks back but immediately reversed; packaging is suffering as word comes out transportation tonnage levels are down. It fell through the 50 day EMA and the 90 day, coming back to tap the 90 day SMA on the Tuesday high (25.10) and faded. Looking for that kiss goodbye to set up more downside. A move to the target lands a 60%ish gain.
Volume: 1.435M Avg Volume: 1.058M
BUY POINT: $24.38 Volume=1.4M Target=$23.05 Stop=$25.11
POSITION: CCK UE - Sept. $25p (-60 delta)

Play Date: 07/31/2007
FNM (Fannie Mae--$59.84; -1.11; optionable): Mortgage services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/f/fnm.html
STATUS: Put. FNM formed a head and shoulders from May to July. It broke lower last week, on strong, above average volume. Friday it tried to make the rebound, failing at the 90 day SMA. It continued higher this week with a gap upside and another test of the 90 day SMA on the Tuesday high. It rolled over and fell to the 200 day SMA on the close with some high volume. Looking for a break below the 200 day (59.84) to move in for the downside play. A move to the target lands a 42%ish gain.
Volume: 10.157M Avg Volume: 4.718M
BUY POINT: $59.38 Volume=5M Target=$56.35 Stop=$60.65
POSITION: FNM UL - Sept. $60p (-50 delta)

Play Date: 07/31/2007
NITE (Knight Trading--$14.14; -0.31; optionable): Investment brokerage
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/n/nite.html
STATUS: Put. NITE broke lower from a broad 9 month head and shoulders top in last week, clearing the March lows. It rebounded this week, tapping the 10 day EMA (14.85) on the Tuesday high and then rolled over. A break below 14 plows under some important support. We look for that move to enter and a run to the target lands us a 55%ish gain.
Volume: 1.698M Avg Volume: 1.63M
BUY POINT: $13.96 Volume=1.7M Target=$12.45 Stop=$14.61
POSITION: QTN UC - Sept. $15p (-57 delta)
