IMO (Imperial Oil Ltd.--$52.79; +1.27; optionable): Oil and gas refining, marketing.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/i/imo.html
EARNINGS: 1-31-07
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Taking another run at IMO after it made us some money on its last run after its October breakout took it to 62. It sold back with the market this month, but held the 50 day EMA (51) and the breakout at the same point. It started to bounce Tuesday on rising, above average volume. If it can pick up some steam and move on through the 10 and 18 day EMA (53.45) on continuing solid trade it is a buy for the bounce back up.

ENR (Energrizer Holdings--$111.58; +2.03; optionable): Batteries, etc.
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/e/enr.html
EARNINGS: 1-28-07
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. A strong mover making a series of orderly rallies higher and tests. It came back to the 200 day SMA at 100 to end October, similar to its August test lower to that level. It rebounded sharply, tested back the past week, and broke higher once more this week on some excellent volume. Looking to move in and as it continues the upside run, following the rising money flow higher. Very nice move from this strong leaders.

PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT PLAYS
We consider many stocks for pre-announcement plays every week. We get information regarding upcoming announcements and other data that leads us to conclude a split announcement is coming. Even then, however, we have to be discriminating. We have to see a strong technical pattern as well, and thus we reject many potential candidates based on a weak technical position.
The key today is to find stocks in strong patterns or that are ready to rebound off support. A split announcement will amplify the move higher in these cases as we enjoy moves from strong leaders in position to run higher. We won't chase a stock in a poor technical position even if we know it is going to split; it simply won't do us any good, i.e. it typically won't make us any money to the upside. We could list all stocks we think are going to split, but again, that won't make us any money unless we are in an office pool as to what stocks will or won't announce a stock split.
Current Pre-Announcement Plays:
This is a list of stocks we are looking to announce splits. We are not in all of the potential splits plays but are letting them set up for the next move. In each report we look at the candidates that are in the best patterns ahead of their potential announcements. This focus on leaders in good patterns allows us to make good money even if companies do not announce the split. The key with splits is the pattern and of course the strong earnings growth that put it in the pattern in the first place.
AAPL: Still setting up for a break higher off the 50 day EMA. Looking for an announcement IN January.
ATK: Looking for a February announcement.
ATW: Likely to announce in January. Still trying to recover.
BUCY: Starting a bounce from the 50 day EMA.
COST: Forecast mid-December
EDU: Well, the 50 day EMA is slipping away.
EOG: Anticipating an announcement in late January
HRS: Looking to January for an announcement.
ISRG: Looking to pinpoint a date. Still holding above the 50 day EMA, looking for a recovery.
MA: Researching date.
MICC: Tentatively forecast for mid-December
RIG: Nice bounce off the 50 day EMA
SID: Tentatively set for mid-November
STLD: Researching date. Making a stand at the 50 day EMA
SU: Researching date. Major struggle at the 50 day EMA and just waiting to see if it can set back up.
NEW PRE-ANNOUNCMENT PLAYS
Play Date: 11/20/2007
APA (Apache--$101.94; +2.45; optionable): Independent gas and oil
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/apa.html
EARNINGS: 1-31-07
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. After breaking out in early October from a 12 week cup with handle base APA rallied up the 10 and 18 day EMA. As the selling started in the oil patch two weeks back it gapped lower but managed to hold above the 50 day EMA (94.64) last week. Started to bounce and this week volume jumped as APA tested the 18 day EMA (99.46) and bounced on Tuesday. Nice, rather typical test of key support after a solid move higher, and this has set it up for the next run. Looking to move in on the run as it continues.
Volume: 3.922M Avg Volume: 3.422M
BUY POINT: $102.31 Volume=4M Target=$112.45 Stop=$99.35
POSITION: APA AT - Jan. $100c (61 delta) or APA DA - Apr. $105c (53 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 11/20/2007
BDX (Becton Dickinson--$84.33; -0.97; optionable): Medical instruments
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/bdx.html
EARNINGS: Announced 11-1-07
STATUS: Test breakout. Nice surge Monday on strong volume moved BDX out of a short 6 week double bottom base, clearing the October peak to a new all-time high. This base formed to consolidate the September and early October run from the breakout of a larger, 18 week cup with handle pattern. This market is conducive to the more defensive medical plays, but BDX is hardly a defensive stock as it can run well.
Volume: 1.597M Avg Volume: 1.27M
BUY POINT: $84.88 Volume=1.6M Target=$94.95 Stop=$82.92
POSITION: BDX CQ - Mar. $85c (50 delta) &/or Stock

AAPL (Apple Computer--$168.85; +4.90; optionable): iPods, iMacs
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/aapl.html
EARNINGS: Third wee of January
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. A leader in the run higher, APPL sold off and broke its near term trend up the 10 day EMA (169.28). It has held the 50 day EMA and after we lateral move for the week it jumped higher Tuesday as volume had its best showing in over a week. Looking for continued strong trade as it makes the next break higher and moves toward the prior high. Looking to play that bounce.
Volume: 55.13M Avg Volume: 39.507M
BUY POINT: $170.24 Volume=40M Target=$194.95 Stop=$164.95
POSITION: APV AN - Jan $170c (54 delta)

Play Date: 11/20/2007
ISRG (Intuitive Surgical--$287.90; +3.67; optionable): Surgical devices and replacement parts
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/i/isrg.html
EARNINGS: Announced 10-18-07
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Exploded higher on the October earnings, rallying over 330 on the move. It has tested this month, coming back to the 50 day EMA (268) last week, then started higher though volume has not surged with it. Tuesday it looked ready to make the move, and just looking for more volume as it continues higher through the 18 day EMA (288.49).
Volume: 1.188M Avg Volume: 1.216M
BUY POINT: $289.05 Volume=1.8M Target=$337.95 Stop=$283.89

RIG (Transocean--$122.02; +5.16; optionable): Offshore drilling
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/r/rig.html
EARNINGS: Announced 10-31-07
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Strong volume as RIG moved up off the 50 day EMA (115.34) after making a full test of the late October breakout from a 12 week cup with handle base. It made the test during the November selling in the market and the energy sector, but it held that key support and is bouncing higher. Still a buy on this move.
Volume: 7.654M Avg Volume: 6.31M
BUY POINT: $122.55 Volume=7M Target=$142.00 Stop=$119.18

CONTINUING PRE-ANNOUNCEMENT PLAYS
Play Date: 11/10/2007
MA (MasterCard--$182.12; +0.22; optionable): Credit services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/ma.html
EARNINGS: Announced 10-31-07
STATUS: Breakout test. Still ready to move with another nice tight doji at the 18 day EMA. To recap: When most of the credit service companies are struggling, MA is taking bags of money to the bank. It announced strong earnings to end October and gapped sharply higher, clearing an excellent 18 week cup with handle base. Big surge that took it to a psychological level at 200 on the move. It stalled there and came back to test the 10 day EMA on the session lows each session.
Volume: 2.364M Avg Volume: 3.53M
BUY POINT: New: 187.42 (orig. $191.68) Volume=5M Target=$219.95 Stop=$186.22

CONTINUING PRE-SPLIT PLAYS:
Play Date: 11/15/2007
D (Dominion Resources--$46.37; +0.86; optionable): Electric utilities
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/d/d.html
EARNINGS: Announced 11-1-07
STATUS: Ascending base. Moved through the split with little movement though Tuesday It showed signs it was ready to give it a run. Will see if it can continue higher on more solid trade. To recap: Nice lateral move the past two weeks as D bangs up and down between 45 and 46. It is consolidating the late October spurt higher, resting right below the April and May high that mark the top of the base. Gapped lower to the 18 day EMA on the Thursday open then rebounded on rising volume to post a modest gain. Nice set up to move higher, and this stock is in the right sector for a market turning more defensive. Looking for a bounce and run into the split.
Volume: 3.978M Avg Volume: 1.716M
BUY POINT: $46.48 Volume=2M Target=$52.95 Stop=$45.11
POSITION: D DI - Apr. $45c (70 delta, low OI) &/or Stock

CONTINUING POST-SPLIT PLAYS:
Play Date: 11/17/2007
DRQ (Dril-Quip--$57.10; +0.41; optionable): Oil and gas service company
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/d/drq.html
EARNINGS: Announced 11-1-07
STATUS: Breakout test. Nice big doji on the 18 day EMA on rising, above average volume Tuesday. Tried to make the run but slid back for a more modest gain. Still in excellent shape to make the break higher. To recap: Showing outstanding strength in the energy market. DRQ exploded higher to start November, propelled by some strong earnings. The move blasted it out of a 6 month base. It made a nice 10 point surge on the breakout run, and then spent the past two weeks testing that move during the market selling. It held near support at the 18 day EMA (57.27) the past week, holding the 18 day with a doji. Excellent action and looking for DRQ to hold this near support this week and then resume the breakout move once more. We are looking to buy into that move.

Play Date: 11/08/2007
VIP (Vimple Communication--$31.50; +1.39; optionable): Russian wireless
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/v/vip.html
EARNINGS: 11-29-07
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Strong volume Tuesday as VIP jumped off the 50 day EMA, making its best move in two weeks. Looking for it to continue higher and giving up a buy. Looking very solid. To recap: Sold back last week with most stocks, but as with many leaders, VIP managed to hold key support at the 50 day EMA (29.16) and bounce for a gain. Looking for some more volume as VIP continues higher to show us the big buyers are back in. We are looking to take some positions on a high volume move through the buy point and then again as it clears some additional resistance at 32.
Volume: 4.941M Avg Volume: 3.117M
