THE PLAYS:
Upside:
Play Date: 01/03/2008
BTJ (Bolt Technology--$43.10; +4.10; no options): Oil and gas service company. Splits 3:2 on 1-31-08
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/b/btj.html
STATUS: Cup. BTJ started higher this week from the bottom of its 7 month cup base, breaking up through the 200 day SMA (40.63) Thursday with a strong price and volume surge. BTJ was a nice winner for us the first half of 2007, and this long base has allowed BTJ to consolidate those gains and set the foundation for a new rally. Looking to start moving in as it continues this move. We are playing the pre-split run but also BTJ's ability to sustain solid moves.

GPN (Global Payments--$45.21; -0.06; optionable): Payment facilitators
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/g/gpn.html
EARNINGS: Announced 1-3-08 after the close
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. GPN was a stock we owned and traded in 2004 and 2005. After a huge move it needed to consolidate the gains and set up a new foundation to rally form. That started 21 months ago. It rallied well August to early November, moving off the bottom of that long base. After that move it formed the current 9 week base, a nicely formed pattern over the 90 day SMA. It faded Wednesday and Thursday on rising trade ahead of its earnings, but it reported solid results after hrs and jumped higher. We are looking to move in Friday based on the after hours action. As the name states, GPN has the kind of business that does well when overseas economies do well.

MRO (Marathon Oil--$61.88; +0.48; optionable): Oil and gas major
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/m/mro.html
EARNINGS: Early February
STATUS: Ascending base. MRO broke higher to end December and has come back to test this week, holding near support at the 10 day EMA (61). This higher low is setting up the breakout from its 7 month base that has consolidated the strong run to end 2006 and the first half of 2007. It has taken its time, consolidated, and set up once more. Now we just wait for it to rebound off of this near support and give us the entry as it surges upside.
Volume: 4.796M Avg Volume: 5.703M
BUY POINT: $63.25 Volume=8.6M Target=$75.95 Stop=$61.05
POSITION: MRO DL - Apr. $60c (64 delta) &/or Stock

OII (Oceaneering Intl.--$75.18; +3.83; optionable): Oil and gas offshore drilling, services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/o/oii.html
EARNINGS: 2-20-08
STATUS: Double bottom. Volume is up the past two sessions, moving above average as OII surges higher, clearing the early December peak that is the 'hump' in its 11 week base. Strong surge, and it is putting OII on course for a run back up to the old high at 86 for starters. Looking to move in on a continued upside move here and then again on the test that holds and starts to rebound again.
Volume: 1.096M Avg Volume: 778.152K
BUY POINT: $75.55 Volume=785K Target=$90.95 Stop=$71.35
POSITION: OII DO - Aprl $75c (55 delta) &/or Stock

Play Date: 01/03/2008
SGR (Shaw Group--$67.28; +4.97; optionable): Heavy construction
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/sgr.html
EARNINGS: Early March
STATUS: Double bottom. Volume surged Thursday as SGR broke higher over the 50 day EMA (62.32), ready to break over the middle of its 9 week base. The money has started moving into these stocks, and SGR is one of the leaders in the sector. Thus we are ready to move in as it continues higher, and we will then add to positions when it makes its first test.
Volume: 2.446M Avg Volume: 1.605M
BUY POINT: $67.57 Volume=1.6M Target=$79.95 Stop=$64.97
POSITION: SGR DM - Apr. $65c (62 delta) &/or Stock
