THE PLAYS:
Play Date: 01/09/2008
APA (Apache--$107.68; +4.54; optionable): Independent oil and gas
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/a/apa.html
EARNINGS: 1-31-08
STATUS: Test 50 day EMA. Well, APA made very quick work of the 50 day EMA test, rebounding Wednesday on strong volume after peeling back to that level. Undercut the breakout from its 6 week double bottom with handle base, but is right back at moving higher toward a new all-time high. Lots of buying and no short covering jag for this leader.
Volume: 4.864M Avg Volume: 3.468M
BUY POINT: $108.55 Volume=3.5M Target=$122.75 Stop=$104.95
POSITION: APA DB - Apr. $110c (52 delta) &/or Stock

CEO (CNOOC--$180.63; +13.66; optionable): Chinese national oil company
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/ceo.html
EARNINGS: 1-30-08
STATUS: Double bottom. Big volume Wednesday as CEO gapped higher off the 50 day EMA (169.39), continuing off the second leg in its 9 week base. We have been watching CEO as it consolidated laterally along the 50 day EMA the past week, and this move is hard to pass up with the strength it is showing.

CHA (China Telecom--$85.20; +6.65; optionable): China telecom
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cha.html
STATUS: Ascending base. Chinese stocks are definitely on the move. CHA gapped higher Wednesday on surging volume, coming off the 50 day EMA (76.34) in its 11 week base. It is ready to clear the early December high that marks the high point in the base. Ready to move in as it clears that level as that will spring it for a run at 100.

TRA (Terra Industries--$46.84; +1.39; optionable): Ag chemicals
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/t/tra.html
EARNINGS: 2-7-08
STATUS: Test 18 day EMA. TRA broke higher in late December, clearing a short but nicely formed 7 week base formed using the 50 day EMA (40.50) as support. A nice quick consolidation of the run out of its July to September base. Nice doji with tail on Wednesday held the 18 day EMA (45.55) on the close. Good test and recovery and ready to continue the breakout run.

CONTINUING PLAYS:
Play Date: 01/07/2008
CPHD (Cepheid--$26.80; +0.73; optionable): Testing systems for molecular diagnostics used in medical, industrial, and biothreat industries
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/c/cphd.html
EARNINGS: First week of February
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Nice volume Monday on an upside session and then held on at the 18 day EMA during the selling Tuesday. Looks set and ready to move out of its base. So show it. To recap: Nice volume the past two sessions as CPHD breaks higher off the 18 day EMA (25.59). This is actually the first test of the mid-December breakout from its 8 week base, and the first test is one if not the favorite entry point for us. Nice breakout volume, nice low volume test, nice resumption of the breakout move on strong trade. Very nicely formed base using the 50 day EMA and 90 day SMA as support, showing plenty of institutions using the test to buy just as they are buying now. Ready to move in as it continues higher to a new all-time high.
Volume: 789.459K Avg Volume: 985.911K
BUY POINT: $27.31 Volume=1M Target=$32.95 Stop=$25.58

FTI (FMC Technologies--$61.26; -0.70; optionable): Oil and gas service company
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/f/fti.html
EARNINGS: 2-14-08
STATUS: Cup w/handle. Very nice, tappign the 10 day EMA on the Wednesday low and rebounding on rising trade. Excellent test of the surge last week, and now it is set to make the upside break. Cramer was talking it up after hours and it was up. Don't care. If it makes the break we will be moving in. To recap: Big surge higher last Thursday on the announcement of 'the Angola job.' That move completed its 10 week base that formed using the 50 day EMA and the 90 day SMA as support, a popular combination for strong stocks left standing in this market. No doubt FTI is a strong stock with a big 2007 run, and this base has allowed it to consolidate and set up its next move. It is testing back the past two sessions on lower volume, forming the handle, the last shakeout of easy sellers, to the base. It tapped at the 10 day EMA (60) on the Monday low and then rebounded to cut its losses considerable. It may still come back to test the 10 day EMA more; if it does we will let it and catch it on a move off of that level. If it continues from here, however, then we will move in and let it carry us higher.
Volume: 1.786M Avg Volume: 1.565M
BUY POINT: $63.55 Volume=1.9M Target=$75.95 Stop=$60.38
POSITION: FTI DL - Apr. $60c (63 delta) or FTI DM - Apr. $65c (50 delta) &/or Stock

OII (Oceaneering Intl.--$74.83; +1.15; optionable): Oil and gas offshore drilling, services
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/o/oii.html
EARNINGS: 2-20-08
STATUS: Double bottom. Nice work in the handle to its now double bottom w/handle pattern with a tight lateral move this week on low volume. Tapped the 10 day EMA on the Wednesday low and rebounded positive. Looks super for the breakout. To recap: Volume is up the past two sessions, moving above average as OII surges higher, clearing the early December peak that is the 'hump' in its 11 week base. Strong surge, and it is putting OII on course for a run back up to the old high at 86 for starters. Looking to move in on a continued upside move here and then again on the test that holds and starts to rebound again.
Volume: 473.175K Avg Volume: 789.909K
BUY POINT: $75.55 Volume=785K Target=$90.95 Stop=$71.35

STE (Steris--$30.14; +0.67; optionable): Medical appliances
http://biz.yahoo.com/p/s/ste.html
EARNINGS: Late January
STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. Solid action Wednesday, tapping the 18 day EMA on the low and surging higher toward the breakout point. Very solid and looking to move in as it continues. To recap: Volume has rallied the past three sessions as STE heads toward the breakout from its 7 month base. It has tried the breakout the past two sessions but could not hold the move. Still a solid pattern and a very good sector for a defensive market. Has quietly set up the breakout, using the market selling as a basing tool. Very nice.
Volume: 596.53K Avg Volume: 427.505K

http://biz.yahoo.com/p/v/vip.html
EARNINGS: Late February
STATUS: Test 18 day EMA. Locked and loaded with the second test of its early December breakout, ready to continue the run. Just want to see more volume as it continues the run higher.
Volume: 3.446M Avg Volume: 3.501M
