EARNINGS: Early August
STATUS: Ascending base. Strong volume the past two sessions as ARD moves off the bottom of its 6 week base. This short base formed with intraday lows above the 50 day EMA (49.93) has consolidated the run from April through mid-May, building pressure for the next break higher in the run from the 4 month base formed January through April. Solid set up for the breakout and it is right at the cusp. Now it needs to show the next breakout move and we are in.

STATUS: Double bottom w/handle. Strong volume Friday as BABY surged up off the bottom in its 8 week base. A quick pause Monday then back up Tuesday, rising near the top of its base, ready to take on the 2006 all-time high (22.50). Strong money flow is surging higher ahead of price. This sector and market leader is ready to make the next break higher.

SII (Smith International--$85.46; +2.32; optionable): Oil and gas service company

EARNINGS: 7-24-08
STATUS: Ascending base. Volume is jumping as SII breaks higher from a 7 week base/trading range that consolidated the April to May run as SII broke out from a 7 month base. That larger base consolidated a strong 2007 run from March to October; after the run SII needed a base to work out the excess and set the foundation of buying for a new run higher. This current short pattern has concluded and SII is breaking higher again. Ready to move in with half a position as it continues higher, then we let it test and move in with the rest of the buy when it bounces again off of that test. A strong leader has consolidated and is ready for the next major run higher.

STATUS: Ascending triangle. Nice March to May run followed by this 6 week consolidation using the 10 and 18 day EMA as support (46.88, 46.50). The 50 day EMA (44.19) has risen to meet it, and with that SWN is starting another breakout and run. It has held its gains as the market sold, going about its business to set up for the next move, refusing to give up gains. Solid.
