I’m not sure if this is whom I should be writing to, but I have to ask. I’m a new subscriber and I started getting into the markets just after it peaked. What has caused this bear market of such dramatic proportions? What are the signs that it is rebounding? Should I be waiting for the tax cut that is still being promised? How should I set up my investment strategy? If these are things I should be asking a broker, let me know, but you guys seem to be the brightest of the bunch out there. Thank you.

Thank you for the compliment. The cause of the bear market was a perceived weakening in earnings due to future slowdown in the economy. The stock market is driven by expectations of growing earnings, usually looking at least 6 months into the future. When earnings are not expected to grow, stock prices come down as […]

When you state specific volumes to watch for on breakout, or a buy point, is that a volume number for the time of breakout or buying, or is it on the entire day’s volume?

August 30, 2000

It is the volume for the entire session. We are looking for the volume to be in that neighborhood when the day is done. Of course, that means we will many times be taking positions without really knowing what the final volume for the day will be when we see an early breakout over resistance […]

I’m not clear about how or if to apply stop loss prices when you’ve written covered calls.

August 30, 2000

Very good question. This is one of the downsides of covered call writing: a stock that looks good starts to fall on you due to market conditions or bad news. You have those calls out there that require you to hold the stock in order to cover. In non-retirement accounts we go ahead and set […]

Reading your Team Trades summary tonight about DISH, I had to wonder if you ever place limit orders ahead of time and then subsequently make the buy trade in the pre-market trading hours, rather than waiting until the public open of the market?

August 30, 2000

Wow. You must have been reading our minds that morning. We were looking at DISH and pondering whether to buy before hours. We held back just because even before hours trading can fade just as the futures fade when the real market opens and the millions of investors hit the tape. That held us back, […]

How does one calculate or estimate the “overhead supply” and/or “congestion” you often speak of in the newsletter?

August 30, 2000

Overhead supply are points where the stock was purchased before it began a drop or correction. We will see a stock try to rally, but then fail and fall below its previous low. The point where the buyers ran out of steam and the selling started is the point of overhead supply. There are those […]

Can you explain why SOX performance has such significant impact on the tech stocks overall?

August 30, 2000

The chips, as a group, have been showing the best patterns for the past three months. They are not stellar patterns, but they continue to recover and form up again after each setback. They do this because they have historically been a leadership group. Moreover, the chips (other than the telecom chips, e.g., AMCC, BRCM) […]

If we enter a prolonged period (6 to 9 months) of volatility switching daily from up to down momentum and back, what is the wisest trading strategy to pursue? Should we become position traders on a few select stocks? Should we focus only on day trading? What will work best?

August 30, 2000

If we do enter a sideways pattern we will more likely have swings up and down that we will be able to measure on a weekly basis, i.e., 2 to 4 weeks up and down. Those are actually very good times to trade as stocks set up more or less predictable rolling patterns. The idea […]
