Relative strength as we use it refers to a stock’s relative strength versus the S&P 500, a broad measure of stocks. We want to see a stock performing well relative to what most consider the standard by which performance is measured (mutual funds use the S&P 500 as their yardstick). One could use an even broader index, but the S&P 500 is the most common.
